Beta Testers

The Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) of the Library of Congress is
seeking Beta
testers for its World Wide Web prototypes of Cataloger's Desktop and
Classification Plus.
The test will take place over a three month period, beginning in July 1998
and continuing
through the end of October 1998.

The Beta product is anticipated to contain all 29 of Cataloger's Desktop
publications and
at least LCSH and Classification schedules C and J from Classification Plus.
Additional
Classification schedules may also be available in less polished condition.

The general public will have access to a limited number of files in the Beta
product by
just logging onto the Web site, but full-level Beta testers will be provided
with passwords
to the complete set of files.

Requirements for being a Beta tester:

   1. Be an institution that creates full level cataloging records using USMARC
(or similar)
formats and preferably LC classification and subject headings.

   2. Have access to a Netscape or Microsoft Explorer Web Browser version 3.x or
higher at
   their cataloging workstation.

   3. Be willing to use the Beta products as part of their regular cataloging
process for the
period of the three month test.

   4. Be willing to complete bi-weekly reports on their experience using the
products.

CDS is particularly interested in evaluating user feedback concerning system
response
time, ease in navigation, effective display of the data, and convenience of
access in a
library context. The test also hopes to measure interest in these products
as a fee-based
   service.

If your institution is interested in being a Beta tester for these products,
please contact :
