ACRL is seeking quality presentations for its 9th National Conference,
     April 8-11, 1999.

The conference will explore how academic librarians can adapt as they
are *Racing Toward Tomorrow.* Research papers and panel programs that
cover any of the following theme tracks are encouraged:

     Environment in flux:
How can we as librarians hone our ability to scan the environment, to
interpret and anticipate changes, and to respond with new and improved
services and collections? How can we not only respond to, but also
     shape this changing environment?

     Multiple roles:
How can we keep and project a clear professional identity while
assuming numerous new roles such as fundraisers, advisers, tutors and
teachers? Which roles (if any) should we discard and which roles must
     we preserve?

     Alternate resources:
What revenue opportunities have entrepreneurial libraries identified?
How can business and industry partner with higher education to use
human and technology resources in innovative ways?
Different players: How can we as librarians most effectively network
with new players in business and industry? What are the benefits and
     risks of new partnerships?

     A new kind of learner:
How can we ensure that students still learn how to learn as they enter
the 21st century? What will be the role of technology in the lifelong
     learning process?

     Expanding knowledge base:
What frontiers of knowledge are on the horizon? How can we as
librarians create and sustain learning organizations that will carry
     us into the 21st century?

     1. Deadline for proposals: June 15, 1998.

     2. The Call for Participation which fully describes the themes and
includes a proposal form and instructions about submitting a proposal
may be found on the web at:
     http://www.ala.org/acrl/call4prt.html

     3. Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of extended abstracts
that should be 250 - 500 words long and the completed proposal form.
A full list of requirements and selection criteria are included in the
     Call for Participation.
