Head of Access Services in the Hilles Library
Harvard University
Reporting to the Associate Librarian, responsible for all aspects of access
services in the Hilles Library. Oversees the entire reserves program for all
FAS undergraduate courses supported at Hilles Library; initiates and
documents reserves operations; serves as liaison to faculty in their use of
the reserves system. Oversees the circulation program; initiates and
documents circulation operations; serves as primary source of information to
patrons and staff regarding circulation policies and procedures.
Communicates and coordinates reserves and circulation policies with the
Lamont Library. Directs the stack management program: plans space usage;
oversees shelving, shelf reading, and shifting. Supervises 7 support staff,
2 of whom supervise 25 student and casual workers. Serves as part of a
senior staff team that develops and establishes library-wide policy. Serves
as liaison to the Office of Information Systems (OIS). With other Library
representatives, develops and implements reserves and circulation automation
policy and practice; oversees the implementation of the circulation and
reserves modules in the Hilles Library of a new Harvard online system and
represents Hilles practices and concerns within the University Library System.
Qualifications:
MLS or equivalent experience necessary; public services and supervisory
experience; strong educational background in the social sciences or
humanities; demonstrated ability to interpret and manipulate complex detail;
excellent analytical and organizational skills; significant experience with
library automated systems and PC applications; sensitivity and flexibility
as required for working in team environment.
Hilles Library supports the undergraduate curriculum in the social sciences
and humanities (with some holdings in the natural sciences). Hilles Library
is strongly committed to active and effective public service and requires
evidence of similar qualities in all candidates.
Compensation: Low 30s

Japanese Cataloger In The Harvard-Yenching Library
Harvard University
Reporting to the Assistant Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library for
Cataloging Services, responsible for cataloging Japanese-language materials
including monographs, serials, manuscripts, maps and microforms. Duties
include original cataloging, authority work, recataloging, and managing the
Japanese portion of the Library's CJK Retrospective Conversion Project which
is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2002. Trains and supervises
casual assistants for copy-cataloging, and part-time student assistants.
Provides reference services covering Japanese materials as needed.
The Harvard-Yenching Library is the largest university Library for East
Asian research in the Western world (collection totals as of 6/30/97:
900,000 volumes, 14,000 periodical titles, 700 newspapers, and 70,000
microforms) with Japanese holdings of more than 245,000 volumes, 4,300
periodicals, 25 newspapers and 21,300 microforms. The average annual
addition of Japanese materials in recent years has been about 3,000 titles
in 5,000 volumes. It is a unit of the Harvard College Library, the library
of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent, preferably with two to
three years working experience in an academic library, with experience in
OCLC CJK or RLIN CJK online cataloging, the Library of Congress
Classification System, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and knowledge
of 1988 revised AACRII cataloging rules. Japanese language proficiency,
including ability to read kanji, kana, and romanization. Familiarity with
other computerized systems, and training in Japanese studies highly desirable.
Compensation: Low 40's

Prairie View A & M University seeks an energetic, creative and flexible
individual to join the Periodicals Department.
The successful candidate will report to the Head, Periodicals Department.
Responsibilities: Assists the Head with management of the daily operations
of the department; participates in the selection of periodical titles in
paper, microform and electronic format and maintenance of records in the
NOTIS database. Provides assistance to faculty and students at the
Periodicals desk including one evening per week and rotating weekends.
Supervises, trains, and schedules student assistants. Participates in an
active user education program of bibliographic instruction, orientations,
tours and classroom training on a variety of electronic resources.
Contributes to development and maintenance of library's web pages; acts as
liaison to selected academic programs.
Requirements: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program, strong
organizational skills, good interpersonal and communication skills.
Familiarity with automated library systems, OCLC, web browsers, Internet
applications, e-mail and listservs. Ability to function successfully as a
member of a team and to work effectively with diverse groups.
Preferred: Academic library experience; NOTIS experience; serials
acquisitions, cataloging or binding experience; web publishing experience.
Salary: $23,000 - $26,000

School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS) in Bor=E5s, Sweden
The one professorship named the SAB-Professor will be specifically
oriented towards one of the four main areas of studies (Library and
information units seen from a macrostructural perspective, Information
organisation and retrieval, Mans interaction with libraries and
information institutions, Libraries/information centres seen from a
local perspective).
The other professorship is especially reserved for the
