The entire discussion of CD-ROM longevity has interested me for some
time. I think we are in danger of looking at only half of the
longevity question: the physical disc. The bigger danger, from my
point of view, consists of the software half of the CD-ROM tango.
How many of us have experienced a software update that left an
older disc of the same database unreadable? I know we have had
that happen here at our library. How many CD-ROM software products
can read discs from another producer/publisher? What effects, if
any, will the concentration of publishers and other media producers
have on the maintenance of software to read CD-ROM products from
defunct publishers/producers? How many CD-ROM disc producers are
going to be around in 10 years? In 25? How many CD-ROM disc drive
manufacturers will there be in 10 years time? It has been my
feeling for a long time that CD-ROM will end up being the 8-track
tape of the information industry. I hope I am wrong. The larger
question, however, is what if I'm right?
