Z39.50: Crossing All Platforms

Imagine a single search interface for your patrons to access the various
databases you offer-including bibliographic, full-text, image, and
multimedia-whether those databases are local or accessible via the
Internet. Impossible? Not necessarily. You can use Z39.50 to implement
just such a scenario.

Z39.50 is a standard information retrieval protocol that can be used to
search multiple, distributed information resources through a uniform
interface. Many library automation systems now support Z39.50. Its use,
however, is spreading beyond online catalogs to repositories of museum
information, geospatial data, and government information.

What is Z39.50? What does it offer? How does it work? Now is the time to
get some answers!

This introductory workshop on Z39.50 will answer these questions:
* What is Z39.50 and how does it fit in with other library technologies?
* How does Z39.50 work across all platforms?
* Where is this standard headed and how will it benefit my library?
* How will Z39.50 provide a single search interface to different kinds
of databases and information resources?
* Is Z39.50 necessary if we have the web and web search engines?

This workshop will focus on how Z39.50 works, Z39.50 concepts &
terminology, and potential applications for your library. The workshop
is not intended to address specific technical details and issues for
implementing a Z39.50 client or server.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Library staff interested in learning about Z39.50, including library
directors, managers, department heads, and automation librarians. A
technical background is preferred, but not necessary.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
William E. Moen, Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas
School of Library and Information Science, received his M.L.I.S. from
Louisiana State University. He recently completed a Ph.D. from Syracuse
University. His dissertation research focused on the 20-year development
of Z39.50. He was Profile Development Project Manager for two Z39.50
applications: the Government Information Locator Service (GILS) profile
and the consortium for Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI)
Cultural Heritage Information profile. His writings on Z39.50 include:
CIMI's Z39.50 Interoperability Testbed: Search and Retrieval of
Distributed Cultural Heritage Information (FORTHCOMING IN April 1998 in
Communications of the ACM) and A Guide to the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 Protocol:
Information Retrieval in the Information Infrastructure, NISO Press,
1995.
