regarding the coffee shop experience:
There is an article in _Marketing Library Services (MLS)_, volume 11, #
6, September 1997 called "Compete with bookstores: Serve your own
cappuccino!" by Norma Blake. It discusses the experience at the
Burlington County Library System Headquarters.

Chicago Public Library has a coffee shop in the Harold Washington Library
Center. It is outsourced to Uncommon Ground, which is a chain in the
city. It occupies the same general area as the used book shop and the
library store. It's pretty popular, but away from general library
traffic.

The Georgetown University Library is about to contract with the
university's Auxiliary Services Department to install a coffee vending
machine, and also a soda/hot chocolate/juices vending machine in one
of our reading lounges. We are going to receive a percentage of the
revenue (exact percent still in negotiation); Aux Services is being
asked to check supplies at least once a day, including weekends; and
provide lids so that our "covered drinks only" policy can be enforced.
Obviously, we don't have the experience yet. But we should be able to
give you more information in a few months.
