        Jack, I can't tell you why this AOL service and others like it
will _not_ replace library reference service as we now know it for the
simple reason that this, together with other parts of the world wide web
are already replacing much of the reference function of libraries.
There are many issues (e.g., quality, equal access, fees, etc.) that
need to be addressed, but the world wide web is not waiting.  Any
resolution will not be easy, since these issues are intertwined with
many other issues on which our society is thoroughly divided.  It is all
very interesting.  I wish I had some good answers.

        This is intended as a very calm response - I hope that it was
received as such.  :-)
