Library Systems Director. University Libraries, Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University.
We seek an experienced individual to provide leadership necessary to
assure that the systems based applications delivered to our client
community are are reliable, and effective. The current
responsibilities of the systems department includes support for an
integrated library system (VTLS), library internal networks, and those
linked to the campus, Libraries web access, public access information
stations, employee workstations, and database related services provided by
the various library units. The University Libraries are part of the
Information Systems division, and collaboration with other information
professionals at the university and elsewhere is important.
The Library Systems Director participates in the Library Advisory Council,
and is expected to work as a team member in cross-unit initiatives.
Reports to the Dean of Libraries.
The position is a twelve-month administrative professional faculty
appointment; salary/rank commensurate with experience and credentials.
The successful candidate should have a degree in Information Science,
Systems, Electrical Engineering ,or Computing, with a minimum of five years
leadership experience in an academic environment. Previous library
experience is preferred. Operational experience with an environment that
included LANs, Internet, VMS, UNIX, TCP/IP, Oracle, Windows 3.x, 95, NT,
and Mac/OS is desired.
Staff development skills are important, as is the ability to communicate
effectively with all members of the client community. Strong
organizational and interpersonal skills required for working with library
staff; management skills including the ability to maximize budget and
personnel allocations. Knowledge of current trends in computer and
information sciences and the ability to articulate effective responses to
changing trends in the delivery of information. Candidates must provide
credentials and references that give evidence of the ability to work well
independently and with colleagues in a rapidly changing library
environment. Finalists invited for interview must demonstrate
communications, organizational and knowledge of systems through a
presentation to library faculty and staff and other members of the
university community.
