Critics of Bill Arms' views, or of those attributed to him, might consider
that librarians still will be needed to find things, even with the arrival
of electronic libraries and in spite of expert systems (which have fairly
limited application). The "information glut" and "information overload"
are being vastly increased by electronic access. I'll suggest that
although structural changes of the type outlined by Arms might occur on
the campus, the net effect of electronic access (we're not there yet,
folks -- it's only just begun) will be an increase in the total number
of librarians, just to help people find things on the networks.
