Cataloging Librarian
Information Services
In addition to managing cataloging staff in the IS department you'll
develop and implement innovative solutions for improving workflow and
integrating new tools into the workflow. Drive the intellectual
development of the online catalog classification scheme and the database
thesaurus. Supervise vendor relationships and monitor effectiveness.
Generate and interpret reports on cataloging production and quality.
Develop training, policies, and procedures for cataloging and library
operational workflow. Maintain awareness of new developments in the field
of description and indexing, adapting and integrating them in to IS
Collections processes.
Qualifications? A Master's in Library Sciences with two years related
work experience, preferably in a special library in a high-tech setting.
Knowledge of AACR2, MARC record formats, OCLC searching, LC
classification and LC Subject Headings, plus print and online resources,
the Internet, and PCs. Excellent communication skills. Ability to manage
multiple projects under deadline constraints. Management experience
strongly recommended.

aspects of computer software and hardware; a strong
commitment to library service; excellent interpersonal
and public relations skills; superior oral and
written skills; a real-people person; willing to be
flexible.
Duties: Oversee electronic services and provide continuity for
staff and patrons; work with NOTIS and other computer
programs; 10% of time involved with cataloging of
library materials; evaluate the potential of
technologies as they apply to the library. Some night
and weekend duty. Added responsibilities as assigned by
the director.

POSITION: Head of Reference Department, Assistant or Associate Professor
AVAILABLE: August 17, 1998
RESPONSIBILITIES: Opportunity to work in a fast-paced, service
oriented environment which is supported by advanced library technology,
including an automated library system and a full range of electronic
resources. Responsible for administration of 8 FTE reference faculty and
staff and all reference services, including general reference,
interlibrary loan, electronic services, bibliographic instruction, and
reference collection development. Provides direct reference assistance.
Must meet faculty requirements for librarianship, professional
development, research, and service including teaching in the library
science program and participation in other appropriate library
activities. Reports to the Dean of Library Services.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Minimum of
5 years of increasingly responsible professional reference experience.
Demonstrated supervisory experience. Excellent oral and written
communication skills and ability to interact and work effectively with
people, both individually and in groups. Experience with electronic
resources. Preferred: Experience in an academic or research library, 2nd
Master's degree.
SALARY AND RANK: Negotiable: $35,000 minimum for nine months. Summer
appointment usually available at up to one fifth additional salary.
Tenure track faculty appointment in the Southwest Missouri State
University Department of Library Science. Rank dependent upon
qualifications. Comprehensive insurance including health, dental and

THE LIBRARY & CAMPUS: The SMSU Libraries contain over one and one-half
million items consisting of over 640,000 volumes; 831,000 documents; over
4,800 serials; 185,500 maps; and significant audio-visual, curriculum,
and microform collections. A staff of twenty-two librarians and
thirty-seven support staff serve the needs of the university community.
The Library uses the Ameritech LMS (NOTIS) and a wide range of Internet,
WEB and CD-ROM products. The Libraries are planning a major addition and
renovation which will incorporate state-of-the-art technology with
completion expected by 2000. Southwest Missouri State University is the
