ACQUISITIONS -- TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, an honors university serving
10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, has recently invested in a new
library building featuring extensive technological development and online
resources (see www.umbc.edu). We now seek a Technical Services Librarian
to manage monographic acquisitions, supervise staff and student
assistants, participate in Technical Services management, provide
leadership in effective use of online systems and electronic resources,
and monitor and report on materials budgets.
Salary $32,000 to $37,500 depending on qualifications. Attractive
benefits.
Qualifications: An ALA-accredited MLS and at least one year professional
technical services experience are required. Acquisitions and supervisory
experience preferred. Experience in an academic library using an
integrated information management system highly desired. Must
demonstrate understanding of publishing and acquisitions issues, effective
communication skills, and ability to organize and complete projects.

INFORMATION LITERACY/ELECTRONIC SERVICES LIBRARIAN
FULL-TIME, NON-TENURE TRACK
RESPONSIBILITIES: coordinate library instruction, develop new
ways of reaching the student population, and help design new
instruction sessions to meet student and faculty needs. Assist
Electronic Services Librarian with providing easy access to
electronic resources and take the lead in learning new search
interfaces and setting up training in them. Participate in
migration to a new online system. Assist at the reference
desk and participate in assigned collection development
responsibilities. Share responsibility for planning implementing
and overseeing all copying (photocopying, microfilm copying, etc.)
in the library. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the
Executive Director of the Library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: ALA-accredited MLS
Strong interpersonal skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong service orientation
Demonstrated problem-solving skills
Flexibility, initiative, and creativity
Preferred: Experience teaching or speaking to large groups.
Experience with integrated systems and electronic access
Familiarity with a variety of search interfaces, e.g., Ovid,
SilverPlatter, Z39.50, FirstSearch, etc.
Subject expertise in Science, Technology, or Engineering
Knowledge of networking and a programming language

THE LIBRARY: Cullom-Davis Library chiefly serves the needs of the
University's students and faculty. Its collection encompasses more than
1,300,000 items--including approximately 636,000 books, periodicals, and
government documents, 776,000 microforms, and a variety of audiovisual
resources, manuscripts and archival materials. The Library is a depository
for both U.S. and Illinois government documents. The library building was
renovated and enlarged in 1990. The new facilty provides seating for 1,000
students and space for the collection to grow through the year 2000. The
Library is a member of the ILCSO consortium, using ILLINET Online as it's
catalog (Illinet Online will be migrating to DRA software this year).
There are nine full-time and two part-time professional librarians on
staff and 23 paraprofessional staff members.
The Campus & the Community: Bradley University is a medium-sized,
comprehensive university, offering undergaduate and master's level
studies. The university community consists of approximately 6,000
undergraduate and graduate students. The 65-acre campus is located
in Peoria, Illinois, the largest metropolitan area in Central Illinois
(approximate metro-area population 340,000). Peoria is situated on
the banks of the Illinois River, 160 miles southwest of Chicago and
165 miles northeast of St. Louis.

ELECTRONIC SERVICES LIBRARIAN

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for planning, implementing and
overseeing all computing in the library and for the library WWW
site. Coordinates documentation of electronic services and works
with other librarians to evaluate, test, implement and oversee
electronic services such as the library catalog, online databases,
CD-ROM databases, etc. Serves as technology lead implementor in
migration to new integrated online system. Supervises electronic
services staff. Assists at the reference desk. Serves as the main
contact with campus Computing Services for follow-up on computer
problems, coordinating projects, etc. Represents the Library on
the Academic Computing Advisory Committee and other campus technology
committees. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the
Executive Director of the Library.

technology
