GENERAL INFORMATION

The Oregon State Library is recruiting to fill the position of
Electronic Services Librarian. The purpose of this position is to
take the lead in building an advanced library electronic information
services product line, and in aggressively marketing these products
to the library's target customers.. The Electronic Services Librarian uses
knowledge of library automation, database, online information
applications, and expertise in information delivery over the World
Wide Web, to plan, organize, and lead in the continuing development of the
Oregon State Library's electronic information services. This person
has primary responsibility for maintaining and developing WORKsmart, the
Web-based Intranet for state government, and also coordinates
marketing to and training of state agency library customers in the
electronic information product area. The Electronic Services Librarian works in
a team-based environment with the support of the Group Leader for
Information and Technical Services.

The Oregon State Library is an independent state agency governed by a
seven-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor.  The Library
is the principal library and information service provider for Oregon
state government.  The Library is additionally an important resource
for libraries of all types throughout the state seeking assistance with
library development, continuing education, consulting services, and
library funding.  The State Library's mission includes providing quality
information services to Oregon state government, providing reading
materials to blind and print-disabled Oregonians, and providing
leadership, grants, and other assistance to improve local library
service for all Oregonians.

TO QUALIFY

Your PD 100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you have
the minimum qualifications stated in this section:

An American Library Association (ALA) accredited
Master of Library Science degree; and
Three years of experience in library operations;
one year of which must have been in development of electronic information
services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The person in this position is responsible for maintenance, development,
and marketing of the Oregon State Library's electronic information
services products. Major duties include:

Leads in the continuing development of the Oregon State Library's
electronic information services, taking primary responsibility for
maintaining and developing WORKsmart, the state government's  Web-based
Intranet information service.

Leads and coordinates disciplinary specialist librarians in Web
product development, sets policy relating to Web design and
organization, and works to enhance the quality and usefulness of the
electronic information products. Develops and promotes the use of Web
style guides and standards, ensures the currency and accuracy of Web
links, and maintains and analyzes Web usage statistics. Monitors and
evaluates Web content, technical, and site design developments, and
provides library leadership in information systems innovation and
technology application. Works closely with Automated Systems staff to
design and support customized Web extensions such as electronic forms,
internal database applications, site licensing and innovative
applications of commercial services for library and remote users, and
continuing development of information applications

Delivers and coordinates marketing and training for state agency
library customers in the electronic information product area. Trains
professional staff in basic and advanced use of Web information tools,
and coordinates them in aiding in marketing and training efforts.
Interviews individuals and focus groups, to determine customer and
agency needs, and direct electronic product line development.

Participates as a member of the Information Services team in an agency
team-based environment, and contributes to high performance, policy
development, efficient and effective provision of services, program
prioritization, and performance measurement.

Assists the State Librarian and other library administrators in the
development of state-wide and agency programs; may represent the State
Library at national, regional and state library association meetings,
and other library-related meetings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office environment in shared office.

You must be willing and able to attend meetings that may require
evening or weekend work.

You must be willing and able to travel throughout the state; must
have a valid driver's license and good driving record, or must be able
to provide an acceptable alternate method of transportation.

THE APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed and evaluated, including the scoring of
the examination questions, by a screening committee. Based on this
evaluation, the most suitable applicants will be interviewed.  Final
appointment will be made by the State Librarian.

your knowledge (understanding of principles gained by experience or
training,) skills (competencies gained through experience or training,)
and abilities (potential to gain a knowledge or skill) relate to this

        1.      The person in this position will lead and coordinate in
development of the Library's Web site for state government, and in
innovative applications of online information technology. Describe how your
experience and training have provided you with the ability to implement
such an advanced system, and with the skills to coordinate others
participating in the activity.  Include any experience you have had in
project management.

        2.      The person in this position will personally deliver and
coordinate others in the delivery of an aggressive marketing program,
focusing upon outreach to underserved agencies and state agency
employees, and in gathering "product improvement" information using
organized methods of gathering customer feedback and agency needs
assessment. Describe how your background has provided you with the
knowledge and skills to effectively perform in this activity area.

        3.      The person in this position must have strong editorial
and publishing skills and solid grasp of graphic design and presentation
principles, in order to work in the areas of both printed materials for
marketing and training, and for computer visual displays. Describe the
training and/or experience that have prepared you for the
responsibilities in the areas of written communication and computer
display presentation  required by this position.  Include any
experience, training, and accomplishment in the use of microcomputer
applications, World Wide Web site management, graphic design and
creation, and writing and editorial tasks.

        4.      The person in this position must have strong oral
communication skills, in order to deliver marketing and training presentations
to a variety of audiences, including state agency employees, government
officials, library staff, and citizens.  Describe the training and/or
experience that have prepared you for the responsibilities concerning
oral presentations and delivery of marketing and training  required by
this position.

Unix Administrator/Library Systems, Rider University Libraries

Rider University Libraries is looking for a Unix Administrator/Library
Systems for our Voyager client/server library system. This position must
work well in a strong library team environment, and be responsible for the
day-to-day operation of the Libraries' integrated system and server which
runs in a UNIX-Solaris environment. Troubleshooting, performance and
capacity analysis, hardware and software integration of other library
technologies, documentation management, extraction of statistical reports,
writing shell scripts, backup recovery, and implementation of system
software and hardware upgrades and repairs are typical responsibilities
for the Voyager system. This position will act as the Libraries' technical
liaison to the University Office of Information Technology. and the
campus network and work closely with Library administration, faculty, and
staff in training, maintainance, coordination, and planning for
library-related computer systems. Communication and organization skills
are essential for this position, which also requires systematic problem
solving skills to integrate various network components in a strong
library/teaching environment. Reports to the Dean of University Libraries
and works in coordination with the department chairs of the two libraries
at Rider.

Qualifications include an undergraduate degree in computer science or
computer engineering or the equivalent in specialized training and experience;
two years UNIX System Administration experience required. Experience with or
knowledge of library databases/records desirable. A network background
including TCP/IP, IPX, SMTP, SNMP, and Telnet needed. Shell scripting a must.
KnKnowledge of HTML, Windows platforms, and familiarity with Novell or other
network software is disirable. Must be able to work with many levels of
staff and library faculty. Salary range is in the high $30's to $40K. Send

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES
CATALOGER

Responsibilities: Performs original and complex copy cataloging for various
formats, with primary responsibility for music, as one of three
professional catalogers in the Cataloging Services Unit.  Resolves problems
in bibliographic and authority records in local (Innovative) database,
serving as resource person for staff in other units as necessary. Trains
and monitors work of music copy cataloging staff in Acquisitions
Department.  Participates with Bibliographic Services Division staff in
developing, documentating, and implementing cataloging policies and
procedures.  Maintains awareness of latest developments in automated
bibliographic access, especially for music materials.  Possibility exists
for involvement in reference/collection development/bibliographic
instruction.  Reports to the Head of Cataloging Services.

Qualifications:  ALA-accredited master's degree and ability to catalog
music for a university music library collection; ability to work
collegially with staff at all levels in a dynamic and efficient networked
research library environment; knowledge of AACR2, LC classification, LC
subject headings, MARC formats, and a bibliographic utility such as OCLC;
ability to catalog using an automated library processing system; excellent
analytical and communication skills.  Desired: Degree in music and
experience cataloging music in an online environment.

Salary:  $27,000.   Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement

released time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income
