POSITION:             English Literature Reference Librarian

APPOINTMENT RANK:     Assistant or Associate Professor

SALARY:               Minimum $30,000 for Assistant Professor

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The English literature reference librarian functions within the Reference
and Instructional Services Department and reports to the Humanities
Coordinator.  The individual is one of 18 reference librarians responsible
for information services to faculty and students in a broad range of
disciplines.  General reference duties include service at a centralized
reference desk and participation in the Reference Services team and the
Humanities subject group.  Some evening and weekend duty is required.

In addition to general reference responsibilities, the English language
and literature librarian provides reference, advanced research assistance,
and instruction for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty;
serves as the library liaison to the English Department and other
humanities areas depending on background and library needs; develops and
manages collections in various formats in English and American literature,
English language and general linguistics; and develops and promotes the
libraries' electronic texts collection and research initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  MLS from ALA-accredited library or information sciences school.
Several years' professional experience in an academic library, including
reference experience.  Strong subject background in English literature,
language, and linguistics commensurate with developing upper-division and
graduate-level library instruction programs, building collections, and
meeting curricular and research needs of undergraduate and graduate
students.  Knowledge of the publishing industry and publishing issues,
including   electronic texts.  Evidence of ability to communicate and work
collegially with faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and
the general public in all aspects of literature librarianship.

Preferred:  Graduate degree in English or American Literature.  Experience
in collection development.  Record of research and publication in
literature librarianship.  Experience in an e-text center or in developing
and/or promoting literary e-texts.  Knowledge of one or more foreign
languages.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Libraries seeks a creative and
dynamic librarian to lead Reference & Instructional Services in a
centralized main library serving an academic community with expectations
for excellence in scholarly resources and services.  Helps shape and guide
pro-active reference and research services in a rapidly changing
environment.  Serves as a member of the Libraries Management Group and
collaborates with colleagues in library- wide planning, budgeting, and
policy development.  Advises and reports to the Dean of Libraries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads a team of 21 librarians, most of whom also have collection
development responsibilities, and 20 staff.  Has administrative
responsibility for Reference and Instructional Services including Distance
Education, Government Documents and Microforms, Interlibrary Services,
Electronic Services, and Audiovisual Services.  Works closely with 8
reference coordinators to plan, implement and evaluate reference and
research services.  Subject coordinators (Humanities, Science and
Technology, Social Sciences) and the Electronic Services Coordinator are
also a part of the Collection Development & Management team and report
formally to heads of both teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  ALA-accredited MLS degree.  A proven leadership record with
substantial professional experience in an academic or research library
including several years' supervisory responsibility for faculty and staff.
Extensive knowledge of reference sources, practices, and procedures and
evidence of success in introducing new services.  Understanding of
scholarly communication patterns and needs of a scholarly clientele.
Desire to play a visible role in the academic community.  Extensive
knowledge of new technologies and their applications in enhancing user
services.  Strong commitment to providing quality service; ability to work
flexibly and creatively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment;
excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Established record of professional involvement and scholarly activity.
Preferred:  At least five years' experience as a reference librarian.
Collection development management experience in an academic setting.

WRLC operates a centrally-managed electronic library system providing
information retrieval and
digital imaging technology for seven universities in the Washington, DC area.
The system
integrates multiple hardware and software platforms into a single information
resource
available to more than 75,000 students and faculty over a wide-area private data
network (T-1)
supporting more than 600 workstations in the member libraries plus connections
to the campus
networks for access from faculty offices, dormitories, and computer labs.
Software systems
include Endeavor Voyager, OCLC SiteSearch (including WebZ and Image Support
Package),

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for overall planning,
management and
operation of all aspects of WRLC systems, including systems integration, systems
management,
telecommunications and network management, equipment procurement and vendor
relations, and

Qualifications:  Experience in management and operation of a computing center,
preferably in a
university or not-for-profit environment. Must be thoroughly familiar with Sun
Solaris or IBM
AIX server hardware and software, and have hands-on skills with at least some of
the following:
Oracle, Cisco networking software, SQL reporting tools, Windows NT Server, Web
server software
and development tools, Windows 95, Windows application programming tools.

WRLC also has an opening for a Programmer/Analyst: Systems integration, software
