Subject: PF'S
I have just spent most of the morning trying to get into various OPAC's around
the world looking for a particle reference. I was truly horrifed to see that
so many catalogues, especially in Canada, require the use of PF characters.
Here in Israel, we also use PF's but every PF key also has a code that can be
used alternatively (Type: xx or yy). Since my keyboard is not set up with same
PF's as the ones obviously set up in the individual libraries, I can not
search, select a library or in many cases, exit nicely. Please, this is not a
big deal. Like I say, we had the same problem in ALEPH in Israel, but we
learned very early on that everyone had a different keyboard. Please, if your
library does this, you obviously do not want outside users searching, so make
that clear and we won't waste time trying to get in.
Thanx,
Carol

Subject: scanning journals' tables of contents
From: lou@engin.umich.edu
I am looking for information on distributing
table of contents information electronically.
Specifically, I would like to know if anyone
has done a cost comparison between using scan-
ning and optical character recognition tech-
nology vs. manually typing tables of contents.
In lieu of empirical data, hunches and guesses
will be gratefully accepted.
Thank you.

Subject: Automation for Research Tape Library
We are desirous of automating our tape library for our acoustic research
center. We have large quantities of high density telemetry tapes, processed
data, and software, both classified and unclassified. We are looking for
software which could run on Sun 4, Macintosh, or VAX to maintain card catalog
type information, as well as circulation and useage history.
Please email, and I will post a summary.
Thanks

the platform is macs currently linked by appletalk using phonenet connectors
with the future plan being an ethernet network linked to the campus backbone.
I would like to hear from anyone with experience or ideas on this. Currently
there are:
