We are considering display/print options for our library's Z39.50 gateway,
which supports the online catalog and several citation databases. The
questions we are exploring include:
1. What formats to display
e.g. brief bibliographic citation, full record, citation with abstract.
Always include holdings, or make holdings an option?
2. What formats to print/download
including tagged output suitable for downloading to bibliographic
management software such as ProCite; include a format designed to take to
the shelves?
3. How to handle customization
e.g. on the spot and/or in personal profiles which can be stored.
The setup should be easy and clear for the casual user, so we need to know
what the majority of users would like as a default, but the setup should
also be able to accomodate the needs of the experienced searcher.
Any comments/advice/suggestions are welcome -- how you do it, an ideal you
can envision, or a system which you think handles this particularly well
(or poorly).
I would appreciate input by Dec. 5, 1997. I will summarize results for the
list. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
