"The Book and the Brave New Library" is the theme for the Association of
College and Research Libraries, New York chapter annual symposium. The
all-day symposium will be held on Friday, November 21, 1997, at the
Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. The Symposium
speakers will represent a spectrum of views on the future of the book:
historical perspectives, the shifting present, technological promise,
issues in publishing, and choices that librarians confront regarding
computerized and print resources.

Sven Birkerts, literary critic for "The New York Times" and writer, and
Michael Lesk, researcher at Bellcore and author of "Practical Digital
Libraries" will be our two keynote speakers. Panelists will include Carla
Hesse, historian from the University of California at Berkeley; Janice E.
Kuta, President of Stockton Press; and Marianne Gaunt, University
Librarian at Rutgers University.

Registration and a morning reception will precede the chapter's annual
business meeting and presentation of new officers from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The
keynote speakers will each speak for approximately 45 minutes from 9:45 to
ll:45 a.m.., followed by a questiona and answer period. Lunch at Binsky's
will be from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The afternoon panelists will speak from 1:30
to 2:30 p.m., with a discussion period following. A wine and cheese
reception will follow the audience discussion with the panelists.

All are welcome to attend. The cost of pre-registration fees are $35
for ACRL/NY members and $45 for nonmembers. All ACRL/NY members have been
mailed registration forms. Interested persons who have not received
registration forms may contact:
