VACANCIES FOR 2 LIBRARIANS AT CERN
CERN is the European Laboratory for Particle Physics employing 3000 members
of personnel from 19 Member States: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
Another 5000 scientists and asociates use the Laboratory to
perform their experiments. The CERN Library which serves this community is
relatively small but offers a wide variety of services with orientation
towards computerisation for maximum efficiency; see

Two vacancies have been opened for librarians as part of CERN's First
Employment Programme which targets qualified candidates having no or only
little professional experience (less than three years). Employment
conditions as well as on-the-job training and other training, as needed, are
adapted to this programme. Candidates having three or four years' experience
may also apply to be considered outside the First Employment Programme.
Qualification Requirements: a university degree and a professional
qualification in librarianship; experience of the range of library work in a
modern library environment, including computerised working methods; fluency
in English or French and good knowledge of the other language is necessary.
The Assignment will be to participate as a team member in a variety of
library work for a demanding international user community. This will include
information provision, interlibrary loans and document delivery, user
support, library technical tasks as acquisitions, cataloguing, classification
and serial control.

Research Libraries, are currently recruiting for the position of
Circulation System Applications Librarian. This position offers the
opportunity for the successful applicant to become a member of a
library staff that has recently organized into team-based structures

CIRCULATION SYSTEM APPLICATIONS LIBRARIAN - UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN II

Reporting to the Head of Access Services, the incumbent in this newly
created position is a member of the Circulation Services Core Team and
will manage and serve as the Libraries' expert on functional
applications of the circulation module (currently NOTIS).
Duties include: problem solving, training staff system-wide, and
recommending and implementing improvements to circulation system
applications; participating in circulation system projects related to
new NOTIS releases and evaluating and recommending a new integrated
library management system; leading in the development of the Access
Services WWW presence; monitoring patron file activity from patron
load reports; monitoring billing and adjustment activity and bursar
interface reports; advising the Head of Access Services on technology
planning; working 5-7 hours/week at the main circulation desk; and
serving as the technical resource on the Circulation/Reciprocal Loan
Team.
Minimum qualifications include: ALA-accredited MLS and 3-6 years
relevant experience; working knowledge of circulation, reserve, and
interlibrary loan functions in an automated integrated library
management system; demonstrated experience with mainframe and PC
systems and products and WWW authoring and editing tools; project
management skills; strong public service orientation and experience;
excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
ability to work independently and function effectively in a team-based
environment; willingness to work evening and/or weekend hours as
needed.
Desirable qualifications include: academic/research library
experience; demonstrated experience with the system architecture and
functional applications of the NOTIS LMS circulation module; and
experience with the creation and maintenance of WWW forms and script.
University Setting: The University of Connecticut, established in
1881, is a Carnegie Research I University. It was recently cited as
one of the top 20 public national universities and is engaged in UConn
2000, an ambitious $1 billion campus building project. The main
campus, situated in Storrs on 3100 acres of woodlands and rolling
hills, is located approximately 30 miles from Hartford, the state
capital, and midway between Boston and New York City. There are
approximately 21,750 students system-wide.
Babbidge Library, the main library at Storrs, is currently undergoing
$40 million in renovations that will provide users with a modern,
technologically advanced facility when construction is completed in
the fall of 1998.
Salary range: $36,146 - $46,990, commensurate with experience.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology is seeking a technical reference
librarian. This individual will report to the University Librarian and
works with and on teams in sharing assignments and duties. Provides
reference services including presentations, orientations, instruction,
tours, print & nonprint selection & development, literature searching
and analysis, reference interrogation, service promotion, faculty and
departmental needs assessment, monitoring professional trends. Act as
a liaison to computer science and electrical engineering departments.
Minimum Requirements:
1. ALA accredited Masters in Library and Information Science.
2. Significant and excellent reference service experience.
3. Knowledge and experience in one or more scientific and technical
disciplines taught at NJIT.
4. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
5. Public Service oriented.
6. Excellent computer skills in DOS, Windows, Windows95 based programs
such as MS Word, MS Access, and MS Excel.
7. Excellent searching skills on an integrated library system such as

9. Extensive internet and web searching experience.

Preferred:
