Automation Specialist (Job#383)
$38,400+ DOE
40 Hours week
Anchorage Municipal Libraries is seeking an Automation Specialist.
Interested applicants must have an Masters in Library Science from an American
Library Association accredited school plus at least three years of professional
library experience, two of which included responsibilities leading to the
ability to perform the duties of the position. Desired experience includes
demonstrated system level competence with DRA or other library software and
Open VMS; a working knowledge of WWW authoring tools, Web Server maintenance
and statistical packages; a familiarity with current networking protocols
Z39.50, TCP/IP and ethernet; and a background in MARC records and database
management.
This positions requires the flexibility and service-orientation to thrive in a
rapidly changing organizational and technological environment. Excellent oral
and written communication skills are necessary to interact with non-technical
users and to work in a team-oriented environment. The incumbent will also need
to be a self-starter with excellent organizational, analytic and problem
resolution skills and must have the capacity to handle several projects
simultaneously.
The person selected will manage the day-to-day operation of the librarys online
catalog system (DRA). Duties include responsibility for the installation and
testing of DRA software upgrades; working with the library staff, MIS staff,
and the DRA Help Desk to identify, analyze and implement appropriate solutions
and enhancements; design, implement and document automation procedures for both
periodically occurring tasks (i.e., off-line circulation, inventory, monthly
reports, yearly policy and calendar rollover) as well as day-to-day tasks (i.e.
daily reports, and system management tasks); assumes responsibility for
developing and producing statistical and analytical reports; under the
direction of the unit Manager develops and implements additional library
automation services including full-text access, WWW and Z39.50 server
development; works the reference desk; participates in Automation Support team
short and long-term planning; and performs other duties as assigned.

Iowa State University
Iowa State University invites nominations and applications for
the position of Dean of Library Services. The dean serves as the
chief administrative officer of the University Library system and
has primary responsibility for collection development and
management, library services, budget, planning, and personnel for
the library, and management of the library's information
technology. The dean reports directly to the provost and is the
official representative and advocate for the library in the
university, the state of Iowa, and the larger academic
communities.
A Carnegie Foundation Research I institution and member of the
prestigious AAU, Iowa State University is a comprehensive
land-grant institution. It is located in Ames, a community of
50,000 people known for its exceptional quality of life. Iowa
State enrolls more than 25,000 students in its undergraduate,
graduate and professional degree programs in its nine colleges.
It employs 5,800 faculty and staff, and has an annual budget
exceeding $650 million. The university is in the midst of a $300
million capital campaign, which includes library endowments in
support of resources,services, and equipment.
The university seeks a distinguished leader for its library

The Iowa State University Library system, with an annual budget
of nearly $13.5 million, supports nationally recognized
collections of two million volumes, 2.3 million microforms, and
21,400 current serials. An automated Library system (NOTIS) is in
operation, with a planned migration to a client/server system in
1998. The staff totals 174, including 50 professional positions
with faculty status. The Library is a member of ARL, CRL, BCR,
and OCLC.
The starting date is negotiable, and the salary is commensurate

Provides Internet training and consulting about library related uses
of the Internet as the lead Internet trainer in a statewide library
network environment. Duties include developing, presenting and
coordinating a program of relevant Internet workshops; consulting about
networked information services, including Internet, WWW, and HTML;
participating as a member of the INCOLSA Web Site Coordinating Committee.
Qualifications:
Required: MLS Degree and at least three years experience in
professional positions, or Masters in related field with at least five
years professional experience; a minimum of one year intensive experience
with the Internet and relevant hardware and software including TCP/IP;
proven skills in HTML and other Internet tools; one year of formal
teaching or training experience; demonstrable experience and success
designing, organizing and presenting workshops; history of working with
librarians in a consulting capacity; effective oral, written and
interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated analytical and
organizational skills; willingness to travel.
Desirable: UNIX and JAVA/CGI script writing; knowledge of WEB server
content development and management; experience with a variety of
microcomputer systems and experience with electronic reference services;
adult teaching or training experience; experience providing telephone
support, writing grant proposals, and working effectively as a team
member.
This is not a webmaster position; the emphasis is on training and
consulting.
Salary: Minimum $32,000 depending on qualifications; negotiable.

Team Leader for Student and General Services
Lehigh University's Information Resources is seeking a dynamic and
experienced information professional to fill an exciting leadership position
in its newly integrated Client Services Division. The Student and General
Services Team Leader manages a team of 14 professional and paraprofessional
full-time staff and approximately 50 part-time student consultants to provide
front line support services for Information Resources' combined library,
computing, and telecommunications services. The position is also responsible
for the development and implementation of service delivery plans, including
introductory seminars relating to library, computing, and telecommunications.
Specialized computing and library questions are coordinated through
interactions with other Client Services teams and consultants who provide
professional assistance to colleges and departments. Excellent administrative
and management skills are required to plan, coordinate, schedule, manage, and
monitor all aspects of this highly visible team.
This position requires a Master's degree in computing, library science or
related disciplines. Preferred: three to five years related work experience
with relevant information resources or current information technology,
particularly related to help desks; strong organizational, planning,
coordination and implementation skills for complex projects; ability to work
with clients with diverse needs; excellent communication, presentation and
inter personal skills; familiarity and proficiency with computing operating
systems, software suites and online information retrieval systems; previous
