WLN Announces Collection Analysis For Medical Libraries
Lacey, Washington, October 1, 1997, WLN now offers enhanced Conspectus
software using NLM classification for use in all types of hospital and
medical libraries. This enhancement to the Conspectus software was
prepared by a group of medical librarians in the Seattle /Pacific
Northwest area. Working together, they produced the first collection
analysis tool specifically for medical libraries using the conspectus
methodology.
WLN uses a subject-oriented "conspectus" approach as the basis for
many of its collection assessment services. The WLN Conspectus,
derived from the RLG Conspectus, provides a framework to inventory
library collections in subject divisions for Dewey Decimal, Library of
Congress and now National Library of Medicine classification schemes.
The new conspectus for the NLM classification contains six divisions:
Class Topic
QS-QZ Preclinical Sciences
W-WB Health Professions and Public Health
WC-WD Communicable Diseases and Miscellaneous
WE-WL Medicine by Body System
WM-WW Medicine by Discipline
WX-WZ Health Facilities, Nursing & History
These six current subject divisions are further subdivided by
forty-four categories and some 3,779 subject descriptors based on MeSH
descriptors. This structure can be used for automated collection
analysis performed at WLN and can also be added to the Conspectus File
in the WLN Conspectus Software.
With the WLN Conspectus Software operating on a local microcomputer, a
library or consortium can enter collection assessment information from
Conspectus worksheets nto its own collection assessments database and
produce text and graph reports at any time. WLN Conspectus Software
is available in MAC, Windows and a network version of the software is
also available.
The new medical conspectus is available to all current WLN Conspectus
Software users at no charge. To request a diskette of the new NLM
conspectus, call Lindy Smith, WLN Sales and Marketing, at
1-800-342-5956. Conspectus software users can print their own
worksheets. For non-users of the software, worksheets are available
for purchase from WLN at a cost of $175.00 per set. For information
