NJ/ASIS PRESENTS DR. PAUL KANTOR DISCUSSING THE ALEXANDRIA
PROJECT (APLAB) AND NREN on SETPEMBER 23

On Wednesday, September 23, the New Jersey Chapter of the
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE will hold its
annual membership meeting at the Colonial Farms Restaurant
on Amwell Road in Somerset, NJ.

The featured speaker at the meeting will be Dr. Paul Kantor
of the School of Communication, Information and Library
Science at Rutgers University. In his talk, "NETWORKS
OF INFORMATION," Dr. Kantor will discuss projects underway
at the Alexandria Project, nicknamed APLab, whose mission
is to study library functions whose goals remain unchanged
since the Library of Alexandria but that are now organized
in a structure of rapidly changing technology. One current
project involves user-based networks of information materials,
while another proposed project involves navigating and coordi-
nating library information in the Internet. Dr. Kantor will
also discuss the new National Science Foundation initiative
for a national electronic library and report on a conference
that focused on a national engineering information system.

A social hour will begin at 5:00 pm, followed by dinner and the
evening's program. The cost for this meeting will be 2-for-1
for members and students who bring interested colleagues.
Requests for information and reservations should be addressed
to Barbara Ringk, CIBA-Geigy Corporation, telephone number
(908) 277-7374, fax number (908) 277-4399, by September 18.
