The Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates is seeking
applicants for library positions. College librarians support the
teaching and learning objectives of the colleges, promote lifelong
learning, and assist in the general development of the Learning Resource
Centers. Specific duties include reference work, assisting students and
staff with traditional and highly-automated information systems,
collection development, teaching information skills and independent
learning skills in a variety of forums. Requirements include ALA
accredited MLS or equivalent, minimum of 3 years experience in an
academic library setting and a high level of English language
communication skills. Extensive computer skills and experience in
international or multicultural settings are desirable. Salary range $US
30-45,000 with free unfurnished accommodation, furnishings allowance, 56
days annual vacation, annual air tickets to place of origin, dependent
education allowance and other benefits. The UAE levies no income tax.
The UAE offers a high standard of living, with numerous cultural and
recreational opportunities. The Higher Colleges of Technology offers
certificates, diplomas and degrees in business, engineering, medical and
communications technology fields. The language of instruction and the
workplace is English.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve under the Head, Reference Unit. Provide reference and
bibliographic services to a diverse group of patrons. Provide
bibliographic instruction for introductory and subject specific classes,
including instruction on accessing electronic resources. Teach and design
Internet workshops. Prepare guides and instructional materials. Some
evening, weekend and holiday hours required. Related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA accredited MLS is required as are the following:
academic/research library reference experience; computer skills including
a working knowledge of the Internet, WWW, CD-ROM, OCLC, and integrated
systems; ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken
English; effective interpersonal and public relations skills, ability to
work in a team environment; availability to work evenings, holidays and
weekends. Must exhibit initiative, flexibility, and humor.
Preferred: Experience in bibliographic instruction and online searching.

I'm posting this for a friend, please direct all inquiries to the address

CATALOGER
Requirements: accredited MLS; 2 years professional experience, working
with LC classing; thorough knowledge of AACR2, MARC, OCLC, LCSH, and LC
rule interpretations. Desirable: reading knowledge of a foreign
language; experience with a local automated system (particularly, the III
local system); experience with NACO, CONSER, PCC will receive special
consideration.
Duties: Responsible for copy and original cataloging in a variety of
formats - books, serials, and microforms in OCLC database and MERLIN, the
University's local system. Commitment of high accuracy and output.
Maintenance of bibliographic data on local system and ability to help
support staff with numerous MERLIN problems. Participation in national
cataloging programs, e.g., CONSER, PCC. Contribute name authority records
and revise authority records of other catalogers. Cataloging of serial
records for CONSER authentication. Ability to work for extended periods
of time in front of a computer terminal. Some cataloging of multimedia
and audio visual materials. Some supervision of students workers and
reference duties from time to time.
Dynamic, self-starting individual able to maintain humor under pressure.
Participate in university governance as non-tenured library faculty.
