Collection Development Head

The University of Rochester, River Campus Libraries, seeks a librarian with
a thorough understanding of the scholarly uses of library collections. Using
collaborative leadership skills, this person: formulates a comprehensive
approach to collection development and management policies and activities
relating to River Campus Libraries' general collections in all formats
 including strategies for the selection of electronic resources.
Participates in managing the libraries' materials budget  now over $3
million. Directs the collection development activities of over twenty
subject specialists based in service areas, and coordinates with the heads
of those areas. Closely integrates collections-related programs among
various library units, including: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Access Services,
Preservation, Systems, the Electronic Resources Team, and the Electronic
Publications Implementation Team. Negotiates licenses, contracts, and
approval programs with publishers and vendors, in cooperation with the Head
of Acquisitions. Directs formal assessments of the collections and, through
analytical reports, maintains awareness of collections use and materials
costs. Oversees the collections' gift and endowment program and works
closely with the Library's Development Officer. Participates in library
governance with other department heads. Reports to the Assistant Dean,
Public Services.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
*  An understanding of the mission of a teaching and research university and
an ability to convey the integral role of the library's information
resources in this setting
*  Collection development experience preferably in a variety of disciplines
in an academic library, including book selection and materials budget
formulation and management
*  An understanding of the evolving role of the academic research library
and how technology affects responsible library outreach and services
*  An ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students about the
library's collections in all formats and their capacity to support
University instruction and research
*  Experience with the application of information technology to collection
development;
*  Strong communication and interpersonal skills
*  Effective use of collaboration in decision-making
*  Marketing and negotiating skills
Record of professional activities
ALA-accredited MLS degree or other advanced degree and equivalent
experience.

Preferred:
*  Advanced academic degree
*  Working knowledge of at least one Western European language

Salary commensurate with background and experience.

                OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

                  SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN FOR
                 INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Head of Systems
Development, this new position has responsibility for implementing
Internet technologies in a digital library environment. Working
closely with the Library's new Digital Services Center, this position
participates in developing creative electronic services designed
around networked-based multimedia resources. As part of the Library's
Web Team, utilizes appropriate technologies such as CGI scripting to
create innovative Web-based programs that enhance library resources
and services. The Systems Librarian for Internet Technologies is
responsible for administration of locally loaded databases and
interfaces (SilverPlatter ERL/WebSpirs). This person maintains an
in-depth knowledge of emerging Internet and digital technologies and
information retrieval standards, assists in Unix/Web servers system
administration, participates in reference and consulting services
provided through the Digital Services Center, serves on library-wide
committees, task forces, and teams, and has a subject-based collection
development assignment. This position may be subject to on-call
availability on evenings and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: ALA Accredited Master's degree in library
science; knowledge of Unix operating system; in-depth knowledge of
HTML; understanding of Internet technologies and standards; excellent
written and verbal communication skills; excellent analytical and
problem-solving skills.
 Preferred: Experience with Perl in CGI scripting; experience with Web
server configuration and; management; understanding of SGML.

Candidate will be asked to give a 10-15 minute presentation on a
relevant topic.

SALARY and BENEFITS:  $35,000    Good benefits package

serve campus community and significant off-campus programs with
collections of 700,000 volumes and 6,500 current subscriptions.  The
library uses Innovative Interfaces system.  One of the six public
doctoral level universities in Virginia, Old Dominion University has
17,400 students and 623 full-time faculty; in addition to the main
campus, 3 regional higher education centers, and a planned Virginia
Beach campus, the university provides an extensive distance education

Old Dominion University Library invites applications and nominations
for the position of Cataloging Services Librarian.  The Cataloging
Services Librarian will bring vision and  energy to managing the
operations of the Cataloging Services Unit which is responsible for
both original and copy cataloging, and catalog maintenance of
materials in all formats including government publications.  The
incumbent will lead the unit in implementing state-of-the-art
organization of, and access to, the Library's local and remote
resources.  This position reports to the Head of Bibliographic
Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Personnel management of one librarian, five
classified staff and student assistants.  Establishes goals,
directions and priorities.  Provides a challenging and supportive work
environment.  Establishes standards, policies and procedures for
effectively organizing and providing intellectual access to the
library's collections and information resources.  Manages the unit to
produce timely and high quality cataloging.  Collaborates with the
Library's Web Team to organize and design access to information in
electronic formats.  Provides leadership in researching, evaluating
and implementing efficient, innovative use of  technologies in a
changing environment.  Participates in staffing public services desk
(including occasional night and weekend duty).  Participates in
collection development activities in assigned areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required:  Master's Degree in Library Science from an
ALA-accredited library School.  Minimum of 3 years experience in a
cataloging setting including supervisory experience.  Experience with
OCLC or another bibliographic utility; experience with AACR2R; USMARC
formats; LCSH; LC classification and with integrated library systems.
Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.  Demonstrated
planning, managerial and supervisory skills.
Preferred:  Experience with government publications processing.
High degree of computer literacy and current awareness of new
technologies.  Knowledge of HTML, SGML.  Knowledge of
Innovative Interfaces ILS.  Knowledge of at least one foreign language.

Candidates will be asked to give a 10-15 minute presentation on a
relevant topic.
