Attention: public librarians, academic and special librarians

Academic Business Libraries Exchange (ABLE)
of the California Academic and Research Libraries
is planning a great preconference at the CARL annual
conference in Oakland! Do join us and invite your staff to attend.

SIC Transit, Hello NAICS!
Creating New Pathways to Industrial Classification

Date: Friday, September 19, 1997
Time: 9:a.m. to noon
Place: Waterfront Plaza Hotel, Oakland
        Chart Room

The program will feature experts addressing a major change in the business
information world. Don't miss this if you deal with business, economic,
government or career-related questions!

In 1977, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) will
replace the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) as the new standard
to describe business establishments and industries. The system will be
used by Canada and Mexico as well as the United States for statistical
compilations.

What are the differences between the NAICS and SIC codes? What is the
timeline for development? How will this affect commercial publishers that
use SIC codes? What implications does the transition have for
business research? The program will include a representative from the
Bureau of the Census, a representative from libraries and a vendor
using the codes.

Speakers:

Carole Ambler -- Chief of the Services Division, Bureau of the Census and
Chairperson of the Economic Classification Policy Committee

Jennifer Boettcher, Texas A & M University, Librarian

Margot Diltz, Information Access Corporation

Check out the CARL website for additional information: www.carl-acrl.org

The cost of the program is $20 ($15 if you are a CARL member; $10 for
students).
