Subject: Position Vacancy - Systems Librarian
Position: Systems Librarian
The University of South Alabama seeks an individual to manage the University
Library computer systems. The person in this position reports to the
Director of Libraries. Specific responsibilities include analyzing the use
of computer systems by the University Library; recommending policy and
goals; and managing NOTIS, Solaris and Novell. Other duties include
overseeing the management of University Library networks; planning the
migration to a new library system; acting as liaison to library software and
hardware vendors; reviewing and approving specifications for computer
equipment, software, and peripherals used in the library. Responsible for
coordination of staff training and continuing education relating to the
computer systems used by the library. Prepares statistical reports; uses
SAS for data retrieval and statistical reports with NOTIS.
Required qualifications are an ALA-accredited MLS (a master's degree in a
related field, combined with library-related experience may be considered in
lieu of the MLS) and four years experience with an integrated library system
(NOTIS preferred). Experience with OCLC, UNIX administration (Solaris
preferred), NetWare administration, SAS programming, facility in use of
Microsoft Office and Internet applications is also required.
This is an academic, tenure-track, 12-month appointment at the Assistant
Librarian rank or higher. Salary is negotiable. Excellent benefits.

Social Sciences Librarian, Archibald Stevens Alexander Library

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the New Brunswick Library
Director, participates in the development and maintenance of the Library's
social sciences collections, focusing on Latin American Area Studies and
other disciplines as assigned. Responsible for developing professional
relationships with appropriate Latin American book dealers. The
successful candidate will serve as the liaison to appropriate departments.
This position also provides general and specialized reference services and
library instruction, and participates in library faculty and
university-wide committees.
QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA accredited library school and three years
of professional academic library experience required, with substantial
experience in collection development. Advanced proficiency with the
Spanish language is required. An advanced degree in a relevant subject,
preferably Latin American Studies, is highly desirable. Substantial
relevant experience in a research library and a record of scholarly
achievement is preferred. Familiarity with the use of electronic text and
multimedia, networked information resources, hypertext and desktop
software packages is desirable. A record of scholarly achievement and
involvement in professional associations are preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the New Brunswick Library
Director, is responsible for the development and maintenance of the
libraries humanities collections, primarily focusing on North America and
Western European history, including United Kingdom, and History of
Science. Also provides general and specialized reference services, and
library instruction. Serves as a faculty/student liaison to the History
Department and other appropriate units on campus. Participates in library
faculty and university-wide committees.
QUALIFICATIONS: An ALA accredited MLS degree and three years of
professional academic library experience required. An advanced degree in
History, proficiency in German and/or French, and an in-depth
understanding and ability to work with modern information technology
highly desirable. Substantial relevant experience in a research library
and record of scholarly achievement preferred.

SALARY: Dependent upon experience and qualifications with a minimum of
$39,184 for a Librarian III tenure track appointment.

Information Systems/Circulation Librarian
Responsible for managing the full range of library-based electronic
information, duties will include: support of the library system
(DRA/Alpha/Open VMS) and its underlying database, gateways to remote
databases; supervision of circulation, and participation in information
services long-range planning. The individual selected for this position
must be willing and able to develop and maintain working relationships with
a diverse group of colleagues and clients. Strong analytical and
trouble-shooting skills are essential. Required: ALA-MLS or equivalent
experience and education, a strong academic background, and extensive
experience in library automation. Desirable: Knowledge of DRA, VMS, and

Responsibilities include:
Providing leadership and coordination in the acquisitions and
leasing of information resources. Managing the collection's growth
and services within the framework of the College and Library's mission
and strategic plan.
Assessing resource needs, coordinating input from faculty,
bibliographers and students, and evaluating the collection's value to
the scholarly work of the campus. Identifying and recommending the
"best" resources to acquire or lease through review sources,
specialized bibliographies and analysis of collection use,
interlibrary loan information, and course syllabi, in collaboration
with the subject bibliographers.
Communicating the collection's new acquisitions and services to
faculty and students via newsletter, e-mail or other venues.
Coordinating library exhibits, lectures and other programs including
bulletin boards.
Participation in local, regional and state programs dealing with
acquisition of on-line resources and access.
Providing reference assistance as scheduled and as needed. Provide
library instruction as requested and scheduled. Serve as liaison with
an academic division. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
Qualifications required:
An ALA-accredited MLS. Excellent communication and interpersonal
skills, commitment to collaborative work environment and an ability to
handle multiple priorities in a library embracing advanced information
technologies.
Preferred: Experience in a small liberal arts college, knowledge of
collection development practices, course work or experience in
bibliographic instruction, keen interest and facility in
microcomputers and electronic information resources; a good sense of
humor.
