1) Head, School of Social Work Library/Assistant Professor
Responsibilities: Under direction of Deputy Chief Librarian, responsible
for operation and management of branch library at the Hunter College
School of Social Work: supervise staff of one librarian, two library
assistants, and part-time aides; provide general and specialized
reference, instructional, and collection-related services to the School of
Social Work's approximately 70 faculty and 900 graduate students and to
other library patrons. Qualifications: Required: M.L.S. or equivalent,
from an ALA-accredited library school, plus doctorate or additional
masters' degree, preferably in the social sciences. Preferred: two years'
experience providing reference assistance in social work or social
sciences; knowledge and experience in applying information technologies,
including the Internet and networked online/CD-ROM databases, to the needs
of library users; supervisory experience; experience in planning and
delivering instruction. Salary: Commensurate with experience and
qualifications ($31,128-$35,862). Liberal fringe benefits; 35-hour, 5-day
work week, including some evening and weekend hours.
2) Science/Reference Librarian/Assistant Professor
Responsibilities: Under direction of Head of Reference, participate in
general and specialized reference service, online searching, generalized
and specialized instruction, and collection development; serve as faculty
liaison with departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics,
and Physics; assist patrons in use of OPAC, CD-ROMs, online services, and
the Internet/WWW; develop instructional publications in various formats.
Qualifications: Required: M.L.S., or its equivalent from an
ALA-accredited library school, plus doctorate or additional masters'
degree, preferably in the sciences. Preferred: experience in academic
science reference, electronic resources, online searching, bibliographic
instruction, and collection development. Salary: Commensurate with
experience and qualifications ($29,931-$35,862). Liberal fringe
benefits; 35-hour, 5-day work week, including some evening and weekend hours.
3) Evening/Saturday Services Librarian/Instructor or Assistant Professor
Responsibilities: Under direction of Associate Librarian for Public
Services, responsible for operation and closing of Main Campus Library
during Saturday and evening hours, including scheduling and supervision
of part-time support staff; oversee operation of Reserve Room;
participate in general reference service, bibliographic instruction, and
collection development; assist patrons in use of OPAC, CD-ROMs, online
services, and Internet/WWW; develop instructional publications in various
formats. Qualifications: Required: M.L.S., or equivalent, from an
ALA-accredited library school (doctorate or additional masters' degree
required for rank of Assistant Professor). Preferred: two years'
experience in library public services; demonstrated academic library
reference, electronic resources, and bibliographic instruction skills.
Salary: Commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications
(Instructor: $27,454-$31,545; Asst. Professor: $29,931-$34,011). Liberal
fringe benefits; 35-hours, 5-day work week (up to 4 evenings and Saturday
per week during academic year).

Hunter College, the second oldest college in The City University of New
York, is a coeducational, fully accredited college, with a large and
diverse faculty in the liberal arts and sciences and in several

Library Director
The University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking qualified
candidates for the position of Director of the Lamar Soutter Library. The
Medical Center is one of only 28 freestanding university-based academic
health sciences campuses in the United States and has achieved national
prominence in education and research during its short 26 year history. UMMC
encompasses an advanced tertiary-care teaching hospital, a Medical School, a
Graduate School of Nursing, and a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
The Lamar Soutter Library is a leading supplier of biomedical information in
New England serving as a resource for students, faculty, community
physicians, area colleges, the adjacent biotechnology park, and the citizens
of the Commonwealth. The library subscribes to more than 1,600 journals, has
holdings of more than 240,000 volumes, and provides computerized access to
bibliographic databases, full-text resources, and CAI software. The Lamar
Soutter Library is a member of the Boston Library Consortium, the Worcester
Area Cooperating Libraries, and is a resource for The National Network of
Libraries of Medicine, New England Region.
UMMC is seeking an outstanding individual who will lead the library
successfully into the 21st century. In addition to understanding the
fundamental role of the library as a learning center, the new Director will
be able to work effectively with Information Services to integrate electronic
information technologies with traditional library collections and services.
Preferred qualifications include a Doctorate or equivalent with an ALA
accredited MLS degree and at least seven years of professional experience
including upper-level management experience in an academic or research
library. The successful candidate will have proven leadership, management,
and interpersonal skills that foster teamwork; experience in proposing and
managing large budgets; and a record of successful implementation of
information technology and knowledge management systems.
