MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Apologies for any cross postings. Please take a moment to take a look at this
announcement for our upcoming meeting.
ASIDIC 1997 FALL MEETING
Seattle, Washington
September 21-23, 1997
INCORPORATING INTELLIGENCE INTO NETWORKED INFORMATION
ASIDIC will be meeting in Seattle on September 21 through 23 at
the beautiful Mayflower Park Hotel. Jay Ven Eman of Access
Innovations and Katie Hover of Microsoft Corporation are taking
good care of the local arrangements the venue, the weather and
the social events. But of course, it is the programme that
brings us all together and it is certain to be of interest to
ASIDIC members and non-members alike. Under the expert direction
of Harry Collier, Infonortics, the programme is educational,
exciting and diverse. So, make plans to join us in Seattle in
September!
The electronic information industry has been identifiable for
some 30 years, but is now undergoing a major challenge and
upheaval. Until recently, electronic information services either
served compact, niche markets such as librarians, technical
researchers or financial traders or were based in-house on
proprietary systems (e.g., car rental companies). The advent of
interconnected data networks, and the rise of the Internet with
Web standards and protocols, has opened up the potential market
for electronic information services but, in so doing, has
introduced new uncertainties and much uncharted territory. The
current uncertainties are not so much technical, as commercial
and strategic.
THE PROGRAMME
The Fall 1997 ASIDIC programme helps ASIDIC members and
interested visitors to face some of the uncharted territory and
to learn from the experience of others.
Uwe Geissler of Beilstein will discuss how a traditional printed
handbook product had (within the space of a few years) to deliver
information via traditional third-party host computers, via
in-house proprietary systems, and then via Internet access each
medium bringing its own market profiles and demands.
Sue LaChance of InfoSeek will discuss the network phenomenon of
customised search technology, and how the original dumb-but-fun
breed of net search engines is rapidly seeking to incorporate
intelligence in a quest to find the gold flecks in the Internet's
river of mud.
Robert Steele, head of the OSS organisation, will describe his
'Merchant Banking' concept of helping organisations cope with the
growing quantity and variety of information sources including
electronic, grey and human.
Bernard Smith of the European Commission in Luxembourg will
provoke thought and discussion in his analysis of 'ten myths and
ten truths;' the reactions and discussion following this promises
to be longer than the presentation!
David Billick of Microsoft presents an analysis of a programme he
is carrying out investigating the efficiency of new-user
searching on the Internet and he will offer some thoughts about
what end-user information retrieval behaviour suggests about
issues such as user-interface design, natural language
processing, and Web classification schema.
Terry Noreault will discuss OCLC's Kilroy project a research
project building an Internet harvester, full text databases, and
metadata databases of Internet resources. Via Kilroy, OCLC plans
to study several aspects of the changing state of Internet
resources including end user access to Internet search services,
link analysis and the automatic generation of metadata.
John Audette of the Multimedia Marketing Group updates the ASIDIC
audience on the exciting new tools the Internet is making
available in terms of marketing aids, including true
interactivity and advanced customer identification.
Mark Chussil of Advanced Competitive Strategies works in the
field of simulation software, specifically in a management and
business context, and will be discussing the advances in that
area brought about by the availability of more local computer
power, intranets and the Internet.
Sue Feldman, Datasearch, takes a critical look at the plethora of
new search engines that have appeared in the Web environment, and
asks how good they actually are at finding real information
quickly and easily. She will also address the differences
between Boolean and statistical/NLP search engines, put it in
context of what the user needs from an information
system particularly as regards the usefulness of partially
relevant results to modify ideas of what a subject is about and
to improve a search.

on the ASIDIC Web site.)
Steve Arnold, AIT, brings the meeting to a close with an
'endnote' paper that looks at the promises held out by the new
information tools in the areas of database building, analysis and
data presentation.
THE SCHEDULE
The ASIDIC meeting will begin on Sunday, September 21, with
registration at 4:00 p.m. and a reception at 6:00 p.m.
Registration will continue Monday, September 22, at 7:30 a.m.,
with continental breakfast, followed by the ASIDIC business
meeting. Opening remarks are scheduled at 9:00 a.m., followed
by the keynote speaker.
The Monday luncheon will be at the Space Needle. Attendees will
receive tickets to ride the Monorail to the Space Needle. The
Monorail terminal is inside the Westlake Center which can be
entered from inside the Mayflower Park Hotel. The Space Needle
is a very short walk from the Monorail terminal. The ride takes
two minutes. Lunch will be served at the Banquet level of the
Space Needle and a special elevator will be held for the ASIDIC
group. ASIDIC attendees may take a complimentary ride to the top
of the Space Needle after lunch. Lunch will be table service
which will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m.
On Monday evening, attendees and guests will be treated to sounds
of the jungle at the Woodlawn Park Zoo! The zoo manages the
largest live animal collection in Washington state, with nearly
1,113 specimens representing more than 260 species. The zoo's
botanical collection includes 7,000 trees and more than 50,000
shrubs and herbs representing more than 1,000 species. Buses
leave from the front of the Mayflower at 5:30 p.m. arriving at
the Rainforest Cafe at 6:00 p.m. We'll start the evening with a
reception and time for wandering, and dinner will begin at 7:00
p.m. The buses will return to the Mayflower Park at 9:00 p.m.
The meeting will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23,
and will adjourn at 12 noon.

Dear Colleague,
Below is an announcement for the fall meeting of our sister
organization, EUSIDIC, to be held in Barcelona from October 5-8.
It should be a very good meeting and I can highly recommend
participation in EUSIDIC. Having attended the meeting for several
years, I find it very worthwhile. It is invaluable in presenting
a view of the information industry from the other side of the
Atlantic. You can be certain that the movers and shakers of the
European information world will be present. As an added benefit,
this year the EUSIDIC meeting topic is very complementary to our
own ASIDIC theme.
AND GREAT NEWS! This year we have decided to test a new
inter-organizational agreement. ASIDIC members will be able to
attend the EUSIDIC meeting at EUSIDIC member rates. Likewise,
EUSIDIC members will be able to attend our ASIDIC meeting at
ASIDIC member rates. If you are not yet an ASIDIC member,
perhaps this will be the one additional member benefit to make
you seriously consider joining. I hope to see you in Barcelona!

EUSIDIC 1997 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

INTELLIGENT AGENTS - HERE WE COME
For nearly thirty years, the EUSIDIC Annual Conference has been
the critical meeting place for the key European players involved
in the creation, dissemination and use of electronic information
services. Targeted at publishers, distributors and information
managers, the 1997 program will give a detailed insight into the
best current thinking on the future of information use.
Intelligent agents are systems which are capable of flexible,
autonomous action in dynamic, typically multi-agent domains.
Today, when people working in information encounter the
expression "intelligent agents", we tend to think of software
tools, and the promise held out by the combination of artificial
intelligence and the World Wide Web, of the information user
finding and managing all the information which s/he needs. Is
this promise real? and what are its implications for those other
"intelligent agents" in the information chain, information
managers and publishers?
The EUSIDIC Annual Conference provides a unique opportunity to
hear leading figures discuss the nature of the contribution which
each of these players - information intermediaries, publishers
and software tools - will make. The Conference's three sessions
will provide a state-of-the-art review of the strategic vision,
business models and latest techniques, covering a wide range of
domains, including scientific, business and consumer information.
Speakers will include key figures such as: Walter de Brouwer
(Managing Director, Riverland); Richard Charkin (Group Chief
Executive Officer, Current Science Group); Jan Lamers (President,
Belgium Online NV); Dr. Sherrilynne S. Fuller (Co-ordinator,
Health Sciences Information System, University of Washington); as
well as representatives from a wide variety of organisations,
including Blackwell's, Elsevier, IBM, Prous and Zuno. The
programme begins on Monday morning, 6 October; but there will be
social and other activities on Sunday. The Conference will end
on Tuesday 7 October with a lively debate between representatives
of the three forms of "intelligence"; as well as a series of
practical workshops on highly topical themes: Intranet
Management; European Union Research Projects in Information
Technology; Java; Imprimatur; and Personal Career Management.
These workshops will be repeated on Wednesday morning, 8 October.
