(This position will be equivalent to an Information Systems Associate I or
II.
The level will be determined by the qualifications of the chosen
candidate.)
SPECIFIC DUTIES PERFORMED:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for the WHOI Library
Operations of the MBL/WHOI Library, the Data Multi Media Librarian is
responsible for the scientific data library and specialized technical
collections of maps, audio and visual data in support of the Institution's
Research and Higher Education mission.
* Recommend policy and procedures and participate in long range planning
for archiving, retrieval and dissemination of data obtained in the
research and education activities of WHOI (e.g. oceanographic
sciences, engineering and geophysical data).
* Provide reference service for all aspects of ocean sciences, ocean
engineering, and geophysical data, and provide assistance in the
acquisition of data archived elsewhere.
* Be the principal focal person for the archiving, retrieval and
dissemination of DSV Alvin and Deep Submergence facility data
consistent with the Institution's responsibilities as operator of this
national facility.
* Manage space requirements in support of the Institution's Policies for
data archiving, retrieval and dissemination of data.
* Supervise and train assistants, interns, and volunteers engaged in
providing and supporting services described above.
* Develop a plan for maintaining the data library holdings in the event
of a natural disaster and coordinate this with the Institution's
overall plan in the event of a natural disaster.
* Perform other duties as the Supervisor, from time to time, may deem.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
MLS or MA degree in either library science or information systems field
required (for ISA II level); Bachelor's degree in related field or evidence
of specialized information systems skill with related work experience (for
ISA I level). Ability to work independently on multiple projects
simultaneously, and to supervise staff. Extensive computer experience on
multiple platforms such as PCs, Macs, UNIX. Possess a working knowledge of
OCLC, MARC format, AACRII and indexing theory. Knowledge of relational data
bases and related library software. Strong interpersonal and communication
skills a must.
Highly desirable: Experience with digital imaging, map collections and
large-scale metadata projects in the fields of
oceanography/geology/geophysics. Professional experience in a technical
library or work experience in a metadata project. Experience in cartography
and film archive/retrieval. Undergraduate degree in a science related to
oceanography or marine science highly desirable.
