SYSTEMS AND TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Oregon
Requires Master's degree in Library or Information Science (MLS) from
an ALA accredited program, a minimum of one year of academic library
experience, experience with Integrated Interfaces, Inc. library system
or similar networked system, and experience with relevant computer
technologies. Must have knowledge of cataloging standards and
practices including AACR2, LC subject headings, MARC, and OCLC.
Commitment to quality public services.
A new 70,000 square foot library is currently under construction and
will be occupied January 1998. It will include a networked classroom
and computer lab. The library is fully automated with Innovative
Interface Inc.'s system. All public workstations are Pentium machines
fully connected to the Internet. The library uses IAC's Expanded
Academic Index, OCLC, Docline, and Ariel systems. It is the only
college library in a district of 10,000 square miles. It serves the
community, the college, and the University Center which is sited on the
campus and delivers bachelor and master's degrees from other Oregon
colleges and universities.
SALARY: $34,386 - $40,936 per year, plus fringe benefits. DEADLINE:

POSITION: Head, Database Maintenance, Processing and Bindery
Department
RESPONSIBILITIES:Manages the operations of an automated Database
Maintenance, Processing and Bindery Department which includes editing
and maintaining bibliographic computer databases, automated authority
files, shelf list and other card files. The University at Albany uses RLIN,
OCLC, Geac ADVANCE and Periodicals Maintenance Database systems.
Establishes priorities and work flow for physical processing, binding,
minor mending and bindery outsourcing of library materials. Consults and
works with the Preservation Librarian as appropriate. Supervises, trains
and provides leadership to eight clerical staff and additional student
assistants in the Database Maintenance and Processing/Bindery Units.
Participates in Technical Services and Systems Division meetings to set
policy and determine divisional directions. Collects and maintains
collection statistics and other administrative data. Fulfills faculty
obligations in the areas of research, publication and service to the
Libraries, University and profession to satisfy criteria for continuing
appointment and promotion. This is a tenure track position. Reports to the
Assistant Director for Technical Services and Systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:Required: MLS or equivalent from an ALA
accredited library school. Two years post-MLS experience in on-line
cataloging. Preferred: Previous database maintenance experience or
authority control in an automated environment. Knowledge of basic
processing, binding and preservation techniques. Desirable: Previous
supervisory experience in a library setting, a working knowledge of foreign
languages and experience in a medium or large research library.
SALARY:Commensurate with education and experience. Salary
minimums: Assistant Librarian, $28,000; Senior Assistant Librarian,
$32,000.
TERMS & BENEFITS:Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual
leave @ 1.25 days each per month; health insurance, major medical or
Health Maintenance Organization and dental. Social Security coverage.
TIAA/CREF or New York State Teachers Retirement available (employee
contribution rate = 3%).

THE UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
The University Libraries serve a campus community of more than 16,000
full-time and part-time students and 4,000 faculty and staff. The
Libraries have 127 FTE employees and over 350 part-time student
assistants. Collections total nearly 4,000,000 items of which 1,800,000
are cataloged volumes. The Main Library has approximately 180,000
square feet, seats for 1,400 and is open 96 hours per week. The Thomas
E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the
Rockefeller College Campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal
Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science
and Policy and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government. A new
building which will house the science collections, computing labs,
electronic classrooms and special collections and archives is under
construction and a May 1999 opening is planned.
The Libraries use the GEAC ADVANCE system for its fully integrated
online information system. They provide network access to approximately
twenty-five electronic databases and many CD-Rom and other electronic
resources. Cataloging is done primarily on RLIN and ADVANCE, with some
use of OCLC. The reference staff uses a number of systems including
OCLC, RLIN, CD-ROM networks, and a WWW server. All library faculty and
staff use networked workstations. The Libraries are members of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Research Libraries Group and the
