Wally Grotophorst has written a nice little program called CITEREAD that does
a great job of cleaning up control characters in ASCII text files. It is
"freeware" and is available for FTPing from GMUVAX.GMU.EDU in directory
named library. This is in answer to Alan Boyd's question but might be of
interest to all.
