TOWARD "CONDOC 2" : IDENTIFYING NEW REQUIREMENTS
FOR ONLINE CATALOGS
LITA ONLINE CATALOG INTEREST GROUP MEETING
The LITA Online Catalog Interest Group will meet Saturday, June 28th
from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. at the Marriott, Pacific Suite B, to
discuss new specifications for online catalog systems. Join us in
San Francisco and be part of the interface between research,
practice, and system design.
Client-server computing, the development of graphical interfaces
and the Z39.50 standard, as well as explosive growth and flexibility
of information resources accessible through library catalogs,
call for a new statement of standards based on research into the
needs of catalog users and on comments from working librarians.
System designers want to know what works--because that's what
sells. Researchers are motivated by a desire to find out how
people search and how to improve results. Librarians need to
be aware of research findings and not rely on impressions and
untested assumptions about how to improve service to users.
We need to push vendors to develop search trees and knowledge-
bases; we must refuse to accept systems that ignore catalogers'
careful description, complex coding, and thoughtful subject
analysis
