The Great Bend Public Library is running the Athena OPAC under windows and
has public access internet. They have several terminals that are
handicapped accessible. The problem is that some patrons have problems
using a mouse. We are currently looking into alternatives.
The immediate thought is a trackball. It takes less range of movement, and
is easily used by all patrons. The question is which trackball? I have had
good luck with Kensington products, and they have a good warranty. The only
problem with their turbo mouse is that the ball lifts right out of the
holder making theft a real possibility. I have seen their new "Orbit"
trackball that is supposed to fit the hand more naturally, and it seems to
have a secured ball. I have also seen a device called a stingray that has a
semi-secured ball, and has oversize buttons. I'm just not sure how well its
smaller diameter ball would work.
What we want to avoid is something we will have to replace frequently due
to wear. But we need to be concerned with its suitability to the patrons.
If you have experience with this issue would you let me know what you've
tried, what works, and what doesn't. Please reply via e-mail, and if there
is sufficient interest, I'll summarize replies for the list.
