Case Western Reserve University, a highly-networked campus with a new
$29 million library, is looking for new supervisors for its support
staff.  With new focuses on Customer Service, Collection Maintenance,
and  the expansion of  the student assistant workforce, these jobs work
collaboratively with the Service Desk Supervisor, and report directly
to the Head of Customer Services. Detailed position descriptions are

<smaller>Library Assistant IV (Student Assistant Supervisor) -
University Library - SG/8

Primary responsibility for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating,
supervising student assistant workforce to maintain timely, accurate
information access. Collaborate with Service Desk Supervisor and
Collection Maintenance Supervisor to coordinate, schedule students for
both stack and desk duties.

Use checklists, statistics, performance assessment techniques to
motivate, monitor tasks, improve efficiency, service levels; develop,
maintain student assistant manual. Strong interaction with students as
a supervisor and as a result of high presence in public areas. Personal
duties in assigned areas of 1.2 million-item collection (housed on
compact movable shelving); some routine circulation and information
functions at Main Service Desk; may serve as supervisor in charge
during evening or weekend shifts.

Flexible scheduling preferred. Highly networked, customer-focused
environment requires working knowledge of online library catalogs and
database offerings, WWW tools, and computers. Requires a high school
education, some college strongly preferred; 3 years library experience,
strong supervisory experience required. Excellent interpersonal, oral
communications skills and customer-service orientation a must.

Library Assistant IV (Collection Maintenance Supervisor) - University
Library - SG/8

Primary responsibility for Collection Maintenance standards of 1.2
million items, to ensure accurate, timely information access to library
materials; collection housed on modules of compact movable shelving.
High degree of independence in overseeing modules, collection,
shelf-reading, signage, all operations of daily organization, movement
of materials; responsible for critical thinking, decision-making about
growth needs.

Collaborate with Service Desk and Student Assistant Supervisors to
coordinate, set work priorities, monitor for accountability. Support
all activities with statistics. Some general circulation, information
functions, problem-solving at Main Service Desk. Supervisor of Record
for 5 LAIIIs, collaborate with Service Desk Supervisor.

Highly networked, customer-focused environment requires working
knowledge of library online catalog and database offerings, WWW tools,
computers. Requires high school education, some college strongly
preferred. 3 years library experience and supervisory experience
required. Excellent interpersonal, oral communications skills;

Sales Support Demonstration Specialists (SSDS) - Library Automation

Interested in leading edge technology and a growth oriented company?
Gaylord Information Systems has recently launched its new distributed
client/server library automation system called Polaris running on the
Windows NT operating system.  With the response shown to Polaris from
the larger academics, publics and consortia, we are actively seeking two
full-time employees.

Job Description

The primary focus of this position is to assist field sales staff in
presenting the Polaris software to large public, academic and consortia
prospects. It will require a mastery of the Polaris software
(distributed client/server software running on Windows NT) to be learned
in-house. Working with the field sales and in-house development staff,
the Sales Support Demonstration Specialist will develop appropriate
demonstration scripts, travel on-site, organize the presentation room,
set-up presentation equipment and review presentation material with the
Account Manager. The SSDS would work with Development Staff in learning
the new Polaris functionality and suggesting enhancements to the
software, based on the prospect feedback and individual use. This
position would assist in presenting the Polaris software at various
trade shows both in the booth and in demonstration suites.

This position reports to the Director of Sales.

Requirements

An MLS or MLIS is required and a minimum of 3 years of working
experience in a library is preferable. Comfort with Windows 95 and/or NT
is desirable and an understanding of networking would be beneficial.
Excellent presentation and communication skills, good listening, problem
solving, and ability to think quickly on the spot are highly desired
traits. Ability to adapt presentation style to various market segments.
Ability to learn new software quickly and be able to teach/explain this
new technology to prospects. The applicant should be confident,
enthusiastic, positive, a team player, reliable, enjoy extensive travel

The College Librarian, a library faculty position, offers faculty and
students in the College of Arts & Sciences, Social Sciences Area, (for more

discipline-related consulting to expand their awareness and use of
information and technological resources, both internal and external to the
University.  This faculty position reports to the Head of User Services and
the Principal Bibliographer.

The College Librarian will work with the departments of Political Science,
History, Geography, International Studies, and the Centers for the Study of
Science of Society, Women's Studies, Humanities and Black Studies in the
College to advance the use of computing and information resources in
research and teaching.  Responsibilities include assisting faculty with the
use of the World Wide Web technology, collection development, library
instruction, and providing reference service at the main library.

Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.  Bachelor's
degree in one of the above fields of study.  Two years or more experience in
providing reference liaison work or academic consulting; knowledge of the
information needs of scholars and students in social science fields
primarily in the areas mentioned above.  Demonstrated ability to initiate,
plan, and implement effective programs and services.  The College Librarian
must have technical competencies and experience in the use of networked
information resources, be resourceful, demonstrate effective instructional
and communication skills, and have a strong client ethic.  Preferred:
Advanced degree in a social science discipline.

Salary:  Twelve-month faculty appointment; rank and anticipated salary in
$30,000's commensurate with experience and credentials.
