San Jacinto College, one of the larger community colleges in Texas
serving over 20,000 students, is located in the Houston area This
position will be located at the Central Campus , which has 450 full-time
faculty and serves 10,000 students.
We are seeking a person to direct our information technology efforts.
The position will provide leadership in building and maintaining the
library's computer systems. We are seeking someone with skills in HTML
and other network technology. The college currently has a DYNIX-based
integrated system and a CD/ROM wide-area network. It uses Novell 4x to
link the three campuses. The library's objective is to move to a
Windows95-based system in the next 12-18 months.
Our goal is to build information systems that directly support our
teaching programs. This person would work with the faculty in designing
the information system and report to the Library Director.
Qualifications: MLA form an ALA-accredited library program preferred.
Knowledge of Novell networks, OCLC, Windows and HTML is expected. Good
written and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
are needed.
The position salary is $31,000 with the usual health and retirement
benefits.

Reference and Instructional Services Librarian

Assistant Librarian, Multi-Year Appointment
Appointment and Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Coordinator of Reference Services and
as part of a team of library faculty, the Reference and Instructional
Services Librarian is responsible for providing reference and library
instructional services to the campus community. Provides leadership in
teaching, training, and orientation for students, faculty , librarians,
and library staff in the areas of information technology, research
skills, and information competence. Participates in the identification
and evaluation of electronic reference services which support campus
learning., teaching, and community service. Provides general reference
service which may include evening and weekend hours.
Participates in the development and enhancement of the library Web Pages
related to reference services and resources. Collaborates with
librarians and library staff in the enhancement of electronic reference
services. Depending upon subject expertise, participates in library
collection management. Performs other duties as assigned.
All library faculty are expected to develop and deliver credit courses in
information technology and resources, as well as course-integrated
instruction in information competency.
Abilities:
Sensitivity to and demonstrated interest in providing service to students
with nontraditional or ethnically diverse backgrounds. Ability to work
as an active team participant within the library and on campus. Ability
to work well under pressure.
Minimum Qualifications:
MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution. Experience
providing general or specialized reference service in an academic library,
with emphasis on electronic reference services and the Internet.
Experience with library instruction or teaching credit courses.
Experience with HTML and Web Page design. Excellent oral and written
communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience with Macintosh computers and basic knowledge of UNIX.
Experience with or ability to secure external funding via nontraditional,
entrepreneurial, and traditional academic means. Second graduate degree
in a discipline related to the campus academic program; preference given
to candidate with background in the sciences or computing. Working
understanding of, and experience in the various communities which
comprise the Monterey Bay and Tri-County region. Proficiency in a second
language and experience in bilingual or multilingual contexts.
Campus:
CSU Monterey Bay, currently operating in its second year, is a
comprehensive state university, which values academic quality and the
integration of learning, working and residential living within a
multicultural and interdisciplinary community. The campus is located on
scenic and historic Monterey Bay in facilities described as a "model of
U.S. base closure and reuse" at the former Fort Ord Army Base. CSUMB is
recognized for its multicultural curriculum, commitment to technology,
the development of learning plans, portfolios, and learning
outcomes-based multidisciplinary programs as well as innovative methods
for the delivery of teaching and learning, and community service as an
integral part of the curriculum.
The curriculum is focused on meeting the students' educational and social
needs of the 21st century. Students are required to demonstrate
competency in their fields as part of an overall process to ensure
educational excellence, relevance, continuous institutional renewal, and
ongoing assessment of student, faculty, and program quality. We seek
faculty, students and staff who are willing to join a small, flexible,
committed, and excellent academic community.
Candidates must satisfy university-wide threshold criteria by adding to
the instructor's capability in the following areas: raising extra mural
funds and developing competencies in world languages, cross cultural
literacy, global competence, service based learning and technology
mastery and advocacy.
Library:
The Library Learning Complex is a unit within the Center for Science,
Technology and Information Resources, working closely with Information
Technology, the Media Learning Complex, and academic institutes in the
Center to provide innovative library and information services to the
campus. As part of our mandate to set new directions for library
collections and services, four primary goals have been defined:
1. Provide access to our students, faculty and staff to print and
electronic library resources regardless of their location.
2. Provide a range of promptly accessible library and electronic
resources (e.g., journals, reference tools, databases) that will support
the curriculum.
3. Maximize use of shared resources and avoid duplication through
cooperative arrangements with other nearby libraries.
4. To the extent possible and economically feasible use electronic
resources.
The successful implementation of these guiding principles by the library
will require a unique and innovative mix of services, technologies,
negotiations, access and collections. Therefore, what would usually be
termed library collection must be redefined at CSUMB to broadly
incorporate access to materials as well as ownership of them; to license
and/or acquire relevant electronic publications for on site use; to put
in place a core collection of important print materials not available in
other formats (presently 30,000 book volumes and 350 print journal
subscriptions); and to explore and promote the development and conversion
of instructional and research publications into electronic format.
The library is organized in a nontraditional, interdependent structure
reflecting the mission of the library and the role of CSUMB librarians as
full faculty partners in campus academic and instructional programs and
faculty governance. The Director for Library Services and the Director
for Library Resources are part of a team of library faculty, which
includes seven librarians. The library has a staff of eight FTE library
assistants and student assistant support.
