Position Announcement: Automated Services Librarian
Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois
Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois has a position available for
an Automated Services Librarian. Responsibilities: Provide creative
leadership to plan, develop, implement and coordinate library
automated activities within a collaborative, service oriented
environment. Supervise electronic publishing, acquisitions and
cataloging areas. Participate in the overall management of the
library through strategic planning, formulation and implementation of
policies and development of new services and processes. Work with
Special Collections staff in digitization projects. Teach library
skills to faculty and students; occasional reference desk hours
including some evening and weekend hours. Provide liaison with campus
computing and an academic division. Qualifications Required: An
ALA-accredited MLS and at least three years experience in automated
library services in an academic setting. Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, commitment to collaborative work environment
and an ability to handle multiple priorities in a library embracing
advanced information technologies. Preferred: Ability to provide
leadership in a computer-intensive environment; experience with

The George T. Potter Library of Ramapo College of New Jersey has the
following position available:
Electronic Services Librarian, Librarian 3, ($34,412-38,799 starting
salary), full time, l2 month, tenure track work schedule. l0-6 with
rotating evening and weekend work. MLS required. Prefer science/
technology background.
The Electronic Services Librarian provides leadership in the use of
electronic resources for librarians, faculty and students. Position
includes primary responsibility for a 25+ station CD-ROM Novell network
and peripherals including training and supervision of student lab
assistants and maintenance and enhancement of the WWW Library Home Page.
Experience with Internet applications to library services and interest in
learning technology techniques, e.g., SGML, Front Page, is essential.
Demonstrated skill in online mediated searching (DIALOG) and OCLC needed.
Ramapo's library has an active information literacy program combining new
technologies with traditional resources. Teaching in this program and
serving at the reference desk are expected.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills and one to three years of
professional library experience is desirable. Persons who are energetic,
flexible and able to prioritize effectively will enjoy working in a
collaborative environment with colleagues who want to develop electronic
reference applications for the library's new client server system,
Endeavor's Voyager. This system offers many opportunities for
implementation of creative electronic reference strategies. A qualified

The George T. Potter Library has eight librarians and a support staff of
13. The collection includes l30,000 books, l000 periodicals, and l000+

Ramapo's librarians are members of the local AFT bargaining unit and are
expected to take part in college governance and serve as liaisons with

ARCHIVIST II - WEB MASTER / Archives-Library Division
Contract Position (24,895-30,430 annual wage, with excellent benefits)
NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS
This is a professional position in the Archives Library Division
supported by state capital funds being made available for library
automation. This is a one year contract position available for two years.
The Web Master provides technical advice and assistance to OHS personnel
on the creation and upkeep of information presented on the World Wide
Web. The Web Master manages the Ohio Historical Society World Wide Web
site and assists state agency personnel and the GILS Archivist on making
electronic records available on the World Wide Web. The Web Master will
also work with the Electronic Records Archivist on the presentation and
implementation of the functional requirements of record keeping to state
agency personnel.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Provides technical advice and assistance to OHS personnel on the creation

completing repetitive tasks and to carry out complex written and oral
instructions. The Web Master must be able to promptly report problems to
superiors, manage time effectively, and to work well independently.
QUALIFICATIONS
Masters degree in history, library science or related field; detailed
knowledge of Windows NT server, Windows NT workstation, Windows 95 and
the Internet. Working knowledge of HTML, SGML, word processing, spread
sheet, and database applications. Knowledge of the functional
requirements of record keeping, UNIX systems; and programming languages
including VisualBasic, PERL, CGI, and/or API. Two years at a professional
level working with GILS, electronic records or the World Wide Web;
graduate intern experience may substitute for one year experience.

SYSTEM MANAGER / Archives-Library Division

NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS
The Archives Library Division System Manager will be responsible for
managing, planning, and coordinating all activities related to computer
hardware, software and networks in the Archives/Library.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Manage operation of the division's integrated library system. Assist
staff in the evaluation and selection of electronic resources and with
the installation and operations of these technologies. Recommend policies
for automation/technology. Maintain direct relationship with OPLIN and
the State Library of Ohio, and work with OPLIN and SLO staff, as
directed, on joint projects and initiatives. Assist the Electronic
Records Archivist with the Ohio Electronic Records Archives program.
Chair the division's Automation/Technology Committee. Coordinate
external funding efforts for automation and technology. Keep accurate and
complete records of all system activities. Provide training to staff on
all aspects of technology and automation. Prepare written documentation
on procedures for staff. Act as the official division contact with
vendors, consultants, communications and other technical personnel who
provide services to the division. Work with other OHS divisions and
gateway sites on matters related to technology, automation, and
networking.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.
Ability to train staff, both individually and in groups, in the effective
use of all relevant electronic and computerized applications. Experience
with integrated library system. Experience with microcomputer
applications, local area networks (LANs), the World Wide Web (including
HTML and SGML skills), CD-ROM software applications, online systems, and
telecommunications. Knowledge of electronic archives and digitizing

NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS
This is a professional position in the Library Services Department of the
Archives Library Division of the Ohio Historical Society. An employee in
this position is responsible for cataloging original and microform copies
of archival materials. This position supports the Archives/Library
Division's Access through Automation capital initiative.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Using AACR2, LCSH, and in-house classification schemes, catalog and
classify manuscripts (both collections and single items), including
letters, journals, minutes, memoranda, legal documents, financial
records, and similar handwritten and typescript materials. Prepare
bibliographic records in MARC format and add to the OCLC database.
Perform related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, MARC formats, and OCLC procedures.
Familiarity with American history and government. Working knowledge of
DOS-based microcomputers and software. Excellent word-processing skills.
Ability to work independently and to perform detailed, repetitive tasks
with a high degree of accuracy.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate degree in library science (ALA-accredited MLS). Course work in
archives administration desirable. Two years' professional experience
cataloging and classifying materials on OCLC using AACR2 and LCSH.

Subject: UNIX Programmer Position Opening in VCU
TITLE: Senior Programmer/Analyst (#52999)
DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a highly motivated
individual to administer and support its AIX/Unix (RS/6000) systems in the
research and medical libraries. The candidate will also manage databases,
write programs to support applications, and implement advanced CGI/Perl/Java
scripting for its Web and Intranet. The successful candidate will work at
planning to integrate client/server systems, particularly the migration of
MVS databases to Unix. Other duties will include the management of daily
system operations with others in the automation team, and analyze system
performance. Occasional weekends and evening hours work required for systems
maintenance and databases updating. This position is in the classified staff
(non-facutly) line.
QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a service-orientation with the
ability to work in dynamic, quickly changing team environment. Familiarity
with AIX/Unix (RS/6000) administration, TCP/IP networks, and LANs. Advanced
knowledge and significant experience with AIX/Unix, C/C++, Perl. Ability to
write, maintain, and document code. Good communication and analytical
skills. Experience in library automation preferred. College degree in
computer science or information systems highly desirable. Experience working
in a culturally diverse environment highly preferred.
ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University is a publicly-supported urban,
research university in Richmond, Virginia. It serves 20,000 students on both
the academic campus and at
the Medical College of Virginia. The library has close to 1.2 million.
Systems in operation: NOTIS with locally mounted databases in both a
maifiame and client-server environment, 3 AIX (RS/600) and 1 NT servers,
