I teach in the SLIS program at Indiana University. I have an MLIS and I
have run a public library for 3 years in the distant past. For the past 3
years I have been developing an idea that the internet and much of
information science is really about communication and media which means
about artists and representation. The issue is not so much human computer
interaction (hci) as human media interaction (hmi). In most media folks
interact with the representation not the technology, with images evoked by
the poet, by the film maker, by the storyteller. If the
internet/infoBahn/etc is a medium the artist becomes the guide.
In the fall I approached the department of Telecommunications with my
ideas for the MIME program outlined below. In 20 minutes the entire
faculty voted to implement this idea. It has taken 6 months for all the
pieces to fall into place. Last Thursday Telecom sent mail and said "Let's
do it!" In the fall I move to Telecommunications and MIME starts. This
program may seem odd coming out a a slis program but I think you can see a
number of like glimmerings with the Media Union and SI at Michigan, and
BMRC and the 'Art, Culture, and Technology Seminar' with SIMS at Berkeley
I don't see this program as replacing the MLS or the MIS but as an
addition responding to the obvious visual, attractive, entertaining nature
of the internet and to changing needs of public and private libraries all
over the world who are part of this weird mix. We continue to need
librarians and information professionals but also to the information
architects who combine science, art, a user-centered approach and common
sense.

The Masters in Immersive Media Environments
This is to announce the Masters in Immersive Media Environments
(MIME). MIME is an attempt to respond to the convergence of media
technology (such as television, print, film, telephone) and content
(such as music, pictures, information). This convergence has been
brought about by the digital revolution which means that much media
content can now be represented by digital bits.
MIME brings together teaching and research resources from across
Indiana University to investigate the social and cultural roles of
these new media and to engage in the development of new media for
entertainment, learning, commerce and communication. As a two year
course of study, MIME couples intensive classroom study with an
internship program that allows students direct experience with
corporate and public users of these new media.
MIME is a full time, concentrated, two year program of studies,
coupling intensive classroom activities with an innovative system of
mentoring, an on going series of guest presentations, applied research
opportunities, an internship experience in new media corporations and
a thesis. Each thesis will include an original, marketable, new media
product. All told, the degree will require 48 credits of graduate
activity, spread across many academic units at IU such as:
Telecommunications, Business, Music, Fine Arts, Journalism, Theater,
Education, Computer Science, the school of Library and Information
Science, and Mathematics.
