 LIBRARY ACCESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT HEAD

  RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports to Assistant University Librarian for
  Information Services.  Provides leadership in develop-ing and
  managing  pro-grams and services for on and off campus; provides
  access services with other divisions and branch libraries within the
  university library, distance education sites, Higher Education
  Centers,  corporate and military sites, and the Virginia Beach
  campus to be open in Fall 1998.  Access services include circulation
  and reserves, stacks maintenance, interlibrary loan and document
  delivery, microforms, security, photocopy center contract, financial
  operations of the units and management of two branch libraries.
  Position supervises 17 (3 supervisors, 2 branch coordi-nators, and
  11 staff  members) and approximately  340 hrs. of student
  assistants.   Two branch libraries, the Diehn Composers' Room
  (special collections and the music listening room) and the Hofheimer
  Art Library report to this position, with two coordinators, and
  approximately 40 hrs of student assistants.    Position  will
  analyze departmental organization in view of changing services,
  priorities, and requirements, advances in access technology, and
  developments in library information systems.  Innovative Interfaces
  system recent implementation makes training and full utilization of
  system a priority.  Position includes staff  training and
  development, and collection development assignment. Weekend and
  evening hours as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: An ALA accredited library science degree; a
minimum of  5 years experience at progressively responsible
professional positions; significant supervisory and management
experience; and successful management of library services in a
changing environment.

Desired: knowledge of librarianship and an understanding of the broad
issues facing academic libraries and access services in particular;
comprehensive knowledge of academic libraries' organizational
structures, process, and procedures;   ability to relate tactfully to
faculty, students and staff; responsiveness to the needs  of  the
university and other library units; ability to instill a strong
service orientation; effective and creative leadership; knowledge of
the applications of  information technology  in access services;
effective participation in committees and team-based work; excellent
oral/written communication; negotiating skills with individuals and
groups; ability to use computers effectively.

Also desirable are familiarity with conservation  practices,
knowledge of copyright issues; experience with  microforms;
experiences with  integrated library systems (access services
applications particularly).

Interviewees will be asked to give a brief presentation on
contemporary issues in access services.

SALARY and BENEFITS:  Minimum Salary: $40,000. Benefits include:
TIAA-CREF retirement or Virginia Retirement System, health and life
insurance; 22 vacation days.

TITLE: Electronic Information Services/Reference Librarian
            Kilmer Area Library

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide leadership in the development and implementation of
instruction and training program for electronic information services and
resources for library faculty and staff. Assist in designing supporting
materials for individual and group instruction and training in a networked
environment. Participate in the user education program, collection
development, development and maintenance of Web pages, and reference
services, including weekends and evenings. Research, publication, and
involvement in professional associations are expected.

QUALIFICATIONS: An ALA accredited MLS degree and three years professional
experience required. Strong oral and written communication skills;
ability to work independently, as well as in a collegial and team-based
environment; substantial knowledge and experience with electronic resources
and information technology, including computer networks, multimedia, Internet,
HTML, and Netscape; commitment to user services; experience in teaching or
training. Experience in providing business information services and
undergraduate services highly desirable.

SALARY: Dependent upon experience and qualifications with a minimum of
$39,184 for a Librarian III tenure track appointment.

ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR SOUTH STATE COOPERATIVE
LIBRARY SYSTEM

THE POSITION

The South State Cooperative Library System is a group of libraries in Los
Angeles County (California) which have agreed to work together to
provide citizens with additional services and improved services while not
giving up any local autonomy.

The System began in 1977 and has designed its services to improve
communication and delivery of information and to pursue opportunities
for creative and flexible self-sustaining joint activities which can be
achieved through cooperative effort but could not be achieved
individually.

The System serves an area of over 3,000 square miles in Los Angeles
County.
Included in the service area are over 100 community libraries and a
population of over 3,000,000. Member libraries of the South State
Cooperative Library System are: County of Los Angeles Public Library,
Palmdale City Library, Pasadena Public Library and Inglewood Public
Library.

In 1977, the State Legislature passed the California Library Services Act
(CLSA) which empowers libraries to join together in cooperative
systems. A 13 member state level board, the California Library Services
Board (CLSB), oversees implementation of the Act. A system level
citizen advisory board, the System Advisory Board, provides community
input to the Administrative Council. Fifteen System Advisory Boards
advise the Systems. South State is one of these Systems. An
Administrative Council governs each of the state-wide cooperative
systems. The Administrative Council is composed of the Library Directors
of each member library jurisdiction.

The Administrative Coordinator, South State Cooperative Library System,
reports to the Administrative Council of the System. This position is
responsible for managing, administering and coordinating library
programs, activities, and services of the South State Cooperative Library
System serving Libraries in the Los Angeles County area. The individual
must exercise a knowledge of library programs, policies, and procedures
sufficient to coordinate the programs and services of a group of
libraries, and the principles of personnel management, program planning,
and budget administration.

Skills in management, entrepreneurial tactics, business expertise, and
public relations are essential.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 1. Master of Library Science degree and
four years progressively responsible library experience, two of which
must have been in an administrative capacity directing, coordinating
programs and services of a group of libraries, or a staff capacity
developing and coordinating system-wide technical services operations
such as cataloging, acquisitions, or government publications;
or, 2. Equivalent training and experience.

LICENSE: Valid driver's license.

REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

Administrative capacity is defined as the overall management of a
function or an organizational unit, including responsibility for the
development of procedures, budget preparation, the direction of
supervisory employees, and participation in policy formulation.

Staff capacity is defined as work performed to assist and support
administration by doing research and making recommendations to
administration for the solution of problems such as organization, use of
personnel, allocation of funds, workload and workload fluctuations, or
programs and procedures for accomplishing work objectives.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge in the areas of marketing, revenue generation, and grant
proposals.
Demonstrated awareness of emerging information technology.
Abilities: Leadership, vision, innovation, entrepreneurial skills,
confidence, motivation, sensitivity to the needs of others, and willingness
to make decisions and take risks.

SELECTION PROCESS

A two-step examination process will be used for the position of
Administrative Coordinator, South State Cooperative Library System.
Each candidate's background will be evaluated on the basis of
information submitted on the resume at the time of application to
determine the level and scope of the applicant's preparation for the
position. Those candidates with the highest qualifications, as determined
by the screening process will be invited to the examination interview
weighted 100%.  Interviews will be designed to assess education,
experience, and general abilities to perform the duties of the position.

EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTATION

Verification of employment eligibility according to the Immigration Control
and Reform Act of 1986 will be required of all new employees of the
South State Library Cooperative System.  Applicants will be required to
submit original documentation showing satisfactory proof of identity and
U.S. citizenship, or a legal right to work permanently in the United States.

ANNUAL SALARY

Annual salary begins at $61,964.  A higher level salary may be
negotiated.
Factors such as current level of management experience and salary will
be considered.
