ANNOUNCEMENT OF STAFF VACANCY
Library Systems Manager
(Administrative Staff Position)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinates the daily activities required for
the operations of Barton, the MIT Libraries' automated library
system, currently a Geac Advance system. Supervises the
acquisition, installation, and upgrading of hardware, software,
and telecommunications systems used to support Barton activities.
Participates in the identification and evaluation of new
technologies to meet library automation needs. Works closely
with library staff to identify problems, set priorities, and
develop innovative solutions. Develops and maintains Barton
reports, documentation, and records. Participates in the Barton
Operations Group, a cross-functional team charged with ensuring
Barton's integrity and capability. Coordinates service and
maintenance of the Barton server with Information Systems
Operations group. Works closely with other staff in the MIT
Libraries Systems Office to build a service-oriented team that
quickly responds to staff needs. Approximately 75% of time will
be devoted to Barton matters; remaining time will be spent
maintaining other Unix servers, consulting with staff about
technology issues, and general networking tasks. Works within
the Library Systems Office which is managed by the Assistant
Director for Technology Planning and Administration.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: bachelor's degree or equivalent
experience; at least three years experience with automated
library systems; excellent communication and interpersonal
skills, and a highly developed service and support ethic;
progressively responsible system administration experience,
including Unix; demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
and stay current with technical developments; strong analytical
skills; ability to maintain courtesy and efficiency under
pressure. Highly desirable: significant experience with Geac
Advance; experience in an academic environment; ability to
translate between library and computing jargon; proficiency in
Perl and web site maintenance.
HIRING SALARY: $30,000 minimum; actual salary will depend on
experience.

(architecture and planning; engineering; humanities; science;
social sciences and management) and several branch libraries in
specialized subject areas. The Libraries contain more than 2.4
million printed volumes, over 17,000 serial subscriptions, and
extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides, photographs,
sound recordings, printed music, manuscripts, motion pictures,
and videotapes. The Libraries' automated system is Geac Advance.
The public catalog, Barton, is available within the Libraries and
on the campus network. The Libraries' WWW homepage
(http://nimrod.mit.edu/) presents information about library
services, access to numerous databases, and links to pertinent
Internet resources. MIT Libraries maintain membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, the International Association
of Technological University Libraries, the Boston Library
Consortium, and OCLC through NELINET.
