Through a series of presentations, demonstrations, group
exercises, handouts, and video interviews, this ONE-DAY
WORKSHOP will address the issues surrounding the initial
development and ongoing maintenance of useful World Wide Web
(WWW) servers.
TOPICS
Specifically, the workshop will focus on five major WWW
server topics:
1. Hardware and software
2. Qualities of useful servers
3. Content
4. Server maintenance
5. Staffing
EMPHASIS
In an effort to appeal to the widest audience and provide
the foundation for individual growth, principles and
guidelines will be emphasized over platform-dependent
functions and features.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The workshop is intended for those considering or beginning
the implementation of a WWW server. The only prerequisites
are knowledge of basic computer operations (creating,
deleting, and moving files and directories), a sense of
curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
WHEN AND WHERE
The workshop will be hosted by a number of institutions
across the United States. The first will be at the College
of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA on March 14 from
9:00 - 4:00.
Williamsburg is approximately 150 miles from DC. The closest
airport is Williamsburg/Newport News which is 20 minutes
away. The Richmond and Norfolk airports are about 45 minutes
from Williamsburg. All the airports have limousine service
directly to the hotels.
NATIONAL EXPERTS
The workshop will be led by ERIC LEASE MORGAN, a systems
librarian from the North Carolina State University
Libraries. "I consider myself a librarian first and a
computer user second whose professional goal is to discover
new ways to use computers to provide better library
services."
With the aid of video conferencing, the workshop will also
play host to two other nationally recognized WWW experts.
One is JEAN ARMOUR POLLY, author of The Internet Kids Yellow
Pages. The other is ROY TENNANT, Manager of the Berkeley
Digital Library SunSITE. Both experts will share their views
concerning the WWW and the future of the Internet.
