Title: Government Documents Librarian, State and Canadian Depository
Librarian, Librarian I (PRO-233)

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Government Documents Library,
the State and Canadian Documents Librarian oversees the selection,
processing, maintenance, and evaluation of the Canadian and Michigan
depository collections.  The State and Canadian Documents Librarian works
with other Library staff to develop electronic access to materials and
serves as the primary reference contact for inquiries regarding these
collections.  The successful candidate will be expected to actively work to
acquire materials which have not been distributed via the depository
programs.

Additional responsibilities will include: original cataloging
(approximately 25% of time) of materials in all Government Documents
Library collections (U.S., IGO, Canadian, Michigan); reference service on
the combined Government Documents/Social Sciences and Humanities Reference
desk, including nights and weekends; bibliographic instruction; and
participation in relevant Library, University, state and national
organizations and activities.  May include supervision of support staff
and/or student assistants.

The Government Documents Library is a selective U.S. Federal depository
(approximately 80%), as well as a depository for the State of Michigan, the
Canadian federal government, and the European Union..  The Library also
contains extensive holdings of over 25 other intergovernmental
organizations including the UN, FAO, IMF, World Bank Group, UNESCO, OECD,
Council of Europe and ITU.  Holdings include over 900,000 print volumes,
2.8 million microform pieces, and 11,000 current serials.  The documents
library staff includes 3 FTE librarians, 4 FTE support staff, and 6.5 FTE
student workers.  The Government Documents Library shares a reference point
with Social Sciences and Humanities Reference.

Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS; strong commitment to public
service; familiarity with electronic resources, including Internet
resources; strong written and oral communication skills; familiarity with
AACR2, LCSH, OCLC MARC formats; ability to work well independently and in a
team situation.  Desired: Reading knowledge of French; experience providing
reference service for government documents; knowledge of cataloging and
serials cataloging.

Campus and Libraries: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than
2,000 faculty, 31,000 undergraduate students and 8,500 graduate and
professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres.  The Main
Library and 13 branch libraries have combined holdings of 4 million
volumes.  East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000 located
adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.

Salary: $28,500 minimum, depending on qualifications.

FULL-TIME, TENURE-TRACK POSITION
HEAD, CATALOGING UNIT AND DATABASE PROJECTS
COORDINATOR,
ACCESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT

A full-time, tenure-track position in the Humboldt
State University Library.

The Position:  The University Library seeks an
experienced librarian to head its Cataloging Unit and
coordinate the development of database projects. The
Cataloging Unit consists of the unit head, three FTE
support staff, plus intermittent hourly and student
assistant positions. The unit is one of six within the
Access Services Department which also includes
Acquisitions, Circulation, Collection Maintenance,
Periodicals, and Systems. Unit functions center around
the use of the Geac ADVANCE integrated online library
system and the OCLC bibliographic utility. The
Cataloging Unit is responsible for processing HSU
Library information resources in all formats, both
physical and electronic. The unit presently processes
approximately 8,600 volumes for the collection each
year. Unit activities encompass original and copy
cataloging, authority control, online catalog
maintenance, end processing, and mendery/bindery.
Specific duties of this position include oversight of
all Cataloging Unit operations, personnel management,
hands-on original cataloging, and policy development
and implementation. The unit head will work with
faculty members and staff to design and coordinate the
development of auxiliary local information databases
using Library systems resources. The head of Cataloging
represents the unit in other Library forums. Following
an appropriate introductory period in the Cataloging
Unit, the incumbent will be assigned a limited number
of regularly scheduled hours on the Library Information
Desk. Position reports to the chair of the Access
Services Department.

Professional Qualifications:  Minimum: MLS from an ALA-
accredited program, with at least three years of
increasingly responsible professional experience
directly related to the responsibilities of this
position; previous supervisory/managerial experience;
original cataloging experience; working knowledge of
OCLC; cataloging experience on an integrated online
library system; familiarity with current trends in the
use of technology in libraries and higher education;
excellent written and verbal communication skills;
commitment to a participatory team management style.

Preferred: related professional experience in an
academic library environment; cataloging experience
working with images, Internet resources, and/or other
electronic resources; experience with vendor
outsourcing for cataloging activities; experience with
a government documents retrospective conversion
project.

Starting Salary Now in Effect:  Appointment will be at
the Senior Assistant Librarian level. Rank and salary
are dependent upon the appointee's qualifications and
experience ($38,892-$55,164).   Benefits
include an optional 10-month year, 24 days annual
vacation, 10-14 legal holidays, sick leave, and
competitive retirement and health plans. Librarians are
members of the general faculty with rank and are
expected to meet requirements for tenure and promotion.

University and Library:  Humboldt State University, the
northernmost member of the 23-campus California State
University system, is a largely residential institution
of approximately 7,250 FTES, with a number of master's
degree programs in addition to the predominantly
undergraduate curriculum. Humboldt State University is
