Position Title:  Electronic Information Services Librarian
                 Reference Department, Alderman Library,
                 University of Virginia

The University of Virginia is seeking an Electronic Information Services
Librarian to provide reference service and oversee electronic information
services in the Alderman Library Reference Department.  The Alderman
Reference Department is the Library's central reference service point
and has a primary focus on the social sciences and humanities.

The University of Virginia Library is the 33rd largest library in the
Association of Research Libraries.  Comprising eleven libraries, the
University Library system, along with the professional school libraries of
law, health sciences, and graduate business, serves a faculty of over 2,000
and a student body of close to 18,000.

Building upon the firm foundation of traditional collections and resources,
the Library is aggressively building its holdings of electronic materials and
enhancing its electronic information services.  The Library's main
computer system, VIRGO, provides a NOTIS online catalog with
circulation, acquisitions, and serials check-in.  Also on VIRGO are nine
Wilson indexes and Current Contents, with ABI Inform and Newspaper
Abstracts to be available in September 1992.  A staffed Electronic Text
Center has been established in Alderman with state-of-the-art hardware
and software to access the Oxford English Dictionary, English Poetry 600-
1900, the Patrologia Latina, and a rapidly-growing number of additional
text and image files.

The University of Virginia is located in a cosmopolitan area within half an
hour's drive from the Blue Ridge mountains and two hours from
Washington, D.C., and enjoys the rich historical tradition of its founder,
Thomas Jefferson.

Job Description:

Reports to Director of Reference Services.  Coordinates the work of
Reference Department staff in electronic information services.  Evaluates,
implements, and publicizes new electronic information systems.  Provides
technical support by troubleshooting software and hardware problems.
Participates in reference service, information management education, and
collection development activities in assigned reference areas.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

1.MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or a master's degree in a
related field.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of reference service and of emerging
electronic information services and their applications to libraries.

3.Effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, and presentation
skills.

4.Experience with microcomputer software applications; experience with
hardware or interest in acquiring skills related to hardware maintenance.

5.Commitment to professional growth and development.

Salary: $24,000 or higher, depending on qualifications.
