In a recent posting, I listed an upcoming meeting for ASIDIC, the
Association of Information Dissemination Centers. There have been some
requests for added information on ASIDIC.
ASIDIC is a group of folks very interested in the electronic dissemination
of information in today's information industry. It is a forum where senior
members of the industry can talk freely and discuss the issues that we all
face. It is a small group where we value highly learning from our peers as
well as learning from the speakers that we bring to our conferences. Our
membership includes a cross-section of the industry involved in the
electronic delivery of information, including database producers, database
hosts, academic institutions, creators of WWW search engines, document
delivery organizations and a host of others.
Since there have been a number of requests, I am include an excerpt (below)
for any of you who wish to read further about ASIDIC. Thanks for your
interest. Hope to see you at one of our meetings.
Randall Marcinko, President
ASIDIC
General Information
You are witnessing the greatest technological change and the most important
shifts in society since the first Industrial Revolution.
The Internet and the commercial online services offer unprecedented
opportunities for communicating, publishing, advertising, transacting
business, and developing communities of people with similar interests.
Clearly, cyberspace is the place for organizations that want to succeed in
the information age.
But the best ways to use online services are still under development. Many
organizations are implementing a hodgepodge of approaches and an eclectic
array of services they hope will attract online users.
And many questions are still unanswered: What's the right online business
model? How do you reach emerging markets? What type of systems and services
will ensure success into the next century?
We are seeking and sharing answers to those questions. We are the Associ
ation of Infor-mation and Dissemination Centers. We unite the top decision
makers from a diverse group of academic, government, and commercial
organizations - organizations committed to developing solutions for success
in the information age.
Mission
ASIDIC's member organizations represent links in the information chain -
from electronic database publishers to online vendors to professional
researchers and other users of information services.
Obviously, ASIDIC's members have diverse financial structures, funding,
products, and markets, but we are united by a common goal:
To foster, encourage, and improve the development, production, processing,
storage, retrieval, dissemination and use of electronic information.
To meet this goal, ASIDIC strives to . . .
* Stimulate cooperation and interaction among all types of information
organizations.
* Provide a forum for the examination and resolution of technological,
economic, and educational problems of computer-based information transfer.
* Foster research into the applications of computer and telecommunications
technology.
Benefits of Membership
Meetings - ASIDIC holds meetings every spring and fall. They offer
executives at member organizations opportunities to learn about new
information technologies and exchange ideas with colleagues.
Publications - ASIDIC publishes a member newsletter that includes meeting
summaries, organization profiles, committee reports, plans for the future,
and summaries of the meetings of ASIDIC's corresponding organization in
Europe, EUSIDIC (the European Association of Information and Dissemination
Centers).
ASIDIC committees and member organizations produce survey documents and
other publications that are distributed by the ASIDIC Secretariat.
Issues discussed in ASIDIC's meetings and publications cover such topics as
. . .
==> Online content and interface design
==> Electronic publishing strategies
==> Cyberspace business models
==> Reaching emerging markets
==> Managing online transactions
==> Determining researcher's needs
==> Marketing to end-users
==> Developing new media products
==> Cooperative projects between association members
History
The origins of ASIDIC were established in September 1968 when professionals
from several information centers were brought together in Columbus, Ohio at
the invitation of the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). The centers were
users of CAS magnetic-tape resources and other electronic databases.
Mutual discussion of problems and needs among these centers, coupled with
encouragement from CAS, led to the formation of the Association of
Scientific Information Dissemination Centers. Charter members included
Eastman Kodak Company, IIT Research Institute, the Universities of
Pittsburgh and Georgia, the Dow Chemical Company, and the National Science
Library of Canada.
