EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMIC LIBRARY CONNECTION
INITIATIVE (PALCI)
Position.
The Pennsylvania Academic Library Connection Initiative
(PALCI) is seeking an Executive Director for an initial two-year
term (January 1997 through December 1998). The appointment is
renewable pending the success of the Initiative.
About PALCI.
PALCI, a newly-formed federation of more than 35 public and
private academic libraries throughout the Commonwealth, has as its
mission to improve virtual library services for its members. The
initial program focus is to create a virtual online union catalog
(using a Web-based interface to enable Z39.50 searches across
multiple vendor systems) and to enable direct borrowing of
materials by clients from member libraries. PALCI may also pursue
statewide purchase agreements for online and print information
services, and cooperative imaging, preservation and access
programs. The PALCI offices will be located at Lehigh University.

Description of Duties.
The Executive Director will: work with the Executive Committee
and membership to develop the programmatic agenda; investigate and
develop technical solutions to enable virtual library services for
the membership; develop and pursue proposals to secure necessary external
funding; negotiate consortial pricing for information services;
assist the membership in reaching consensus. Some travel expected,
especially to member institutions within the Commonwealth. The Executive
Director reports to the Chair of the Executive Committee.
Qualifications.
Required: advanced degree in a relevant discipline; in-depth
knowledge of library or information technology; proven experience
working well with groups (especially within a consortia or similar
association setting); a vision of library cooperation and the
application of information technology; open and consultative
leadership style.
Preferred: demonstrated administrative experience (planning, fiscal
management, program and proposal development, general management,
etc.); successful record of fund-raising (grants, foundations, state
funding, etc.); strong organizational, planning, and communication
abilities; sensitive to the needs and concerns of academic libraries;
experience handling complex projects; evidence of providing creative
and workable solutions; ability to produce work on a deadline.
Salary.
Commensurate with the qualifications of an individual who possesses
strong and relevant administrative and technical experience.
