As long ago promised, here's a brief summary of how academic (and a
few public) libraries are currently facing the problem of fulltext
printing costs from CD-ROM and the Web:
1) Nine respondents do not charge for printing, although some have
either a computer use or library use fee which covers costs
2) Seven respondents do charge for printing, at eight-ten cents/page.
Respondents use vend-a-cards, coin boxes, or require payment at a
pick-up location
3) Five respondents do not charge but are looking into the matter and
will possibly begin charging in the future
4) Two do not charge, but printing is limited (10-25 pages)
5) Two do not charge, but patrons must supply their own paper
It seems that the trend is towards cost-recovery through some means.
Those institutions that offer free printing are of varied sizes; it
cannot be claimed that the larger libraries don't charge and the
smaller do. Anyway, it's an issue to keep in mind, it seems.
