PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND THE INTERNET
A comprehensive study by the National Commission on Libraries
and Information Sciences finds that public libraries in the U.S. have
increased their connectivity to the net by more than 100 percent
during the last two years. About half of all public libraries now have
net connectivity. On the down side, "The 1996 National Survey of
Public Libraries and the Internet: Progress and Issues: Final
Report" found that libraries serving communities under 5,000 are
significantly less likely to use the net than are those serving
communities over 100,000. In addition, the report states that
"There are significant disparities in connectivity, service provision,
and budget for Internet activities by region and population served."
