And then there was the suggestion-borne-of-frustration at the last CC:DA
meeting to use "disque" and have done with it. (well, we all knew it was
ridiculous)

I came up with a handy rule-of-thumb some few years ago that has worked
perfectly so far. Look at the physical object you're working with: if it's
round, it's a disc (audio CD's, CD-ROM, vinyl LP's, frisbees...); if it's
square or rectangular, it's a disk (floppies of all kinds, hard disks, and
magneto-optical or WORM disks).
Basically, it follows the analog digital rule, but automatically deals with
the CD/CD-ROM exception.

I was just wondering if anyone checked a dictionary? My 1975 _Webster's
Collegiate_ gives "disc" and "disk" simply as spelling variants. I'm
writing this from home, and don't have an older dictionary handy, but I
managed to find and online 1911 _Roget's Thesaurus_. It also listed
both spellings. Although "disc" is sometimes the more common spelling
(the farm implement is usually spelt d-i-s-c), both spellings are
equally acceptable and seem to have been for for at least the last
80 years.

ONLINE, DATABASE, and CD-ROM Professional magazines used to spell CD-ROM
discs with a "k" for the reasons described by Walter Giesbrecht. We have
since succumbed to popular usage and all three magazines use "disc" for
CD-ROMs and optical media, and "disk" for traditional magnetic media.
Not that we have the last word...or might not change our minds again...and
what to do about magneto-optical media??? Hmmm?
Then again, some major computer magazines still insist on "on-line" or
"data base" - horrors!
