DIRECTOR OF LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES
General Summary:
As part of the Learning Resource Center professional team, the Director
of Learning Technologies is responsible for providing instructional media
and learning technologies services and systems to the administration,
faculty and students in support of the instructional programs, campus
events, and other activities of the College. The Director reports to the
Dean of Learning Resources.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Collaborates with the Dean of Learning Resources concerning the
development of short and long range goals of the Learning Technologies
Department (LTD) and the Learning Resources Division, and formulates a
plan to meet these goals.
2. Develops and recommends Learning Technologies Department policies,
services and resources to meet the immediate and long-range curriculum
goals of the College. Defines LTD's role in the support of external
groups using College facilities.
3. Analyzes, develops and recommends the Learning Technologies
Department budget and the College capital budget for learning
technologies, both equipment and systems. Controls expenditures in
administering the approved budgets.
4. Oversees the provision and scheduling of audio and video services,
public address systems, theater lighting systems and other media systems
in campus auditoriums, lecture halls, and campus locations.
5. Oversees all of the College's learning technologies equipment and the
supervision of employees and students engaged in the scheduling,
maintaining and repairing of such equipment. Responsible for the
installation of media systems and oversees installations by outside
vendors. Enhances capabilities of existing systems.
6. Provides leadership in exploring, acquiring, designing and producing
traditional media and emerging learning technologies to support the
College curriculum, classroom instruction and other College projects:
* Provides leadership and collaborates with faculty in acquiring or
producing multimedia materials for enhancement of teaching and/or
reinforcement of learning.
* Provides direction and LTD staff assistance in development of
Internet and Intranet-based instructional tools and coursework.
* Oversees LTD production of traditional audiovisual formats, e.g.
tape duplications, slides, etc.
7. Contributes to the professional development of faculty and staff by:
* Providing assistance and guidance in the uses of media and learning
technologies in achieving teaching and learning objectives.
* Providing regular training and instruction (workshops) to staff
groups on the uses and potential of a wide variety of instructional media
and integrated technologies.
* Facilitating faculty's transition to emerging technologies.
8. Facilitates the exploration, development, implementation and
evaluation of telecommunications technologies for achievement of College
distance education objectives and for Learning Resource Center provision
of satellite, cable, and compressed video services. Provides operation
and maintenance of the College's distance learning classroom(s).
9. Oversees the activities, both technical and organizational, for the
sponsorship of teleconferences, other off-satellite recordings and the
film/video rental service.
10. Determines levels of media service and resources to be provided to
community clients and plans for appropriate coverage of events.
11. Provides leadership and direction to LTD staff. Recommends the
hiring of subordinates; trains, develops, and evaluates them and, when
necessary, recommends their discipline and discharge. Oversees the
training of student assistants.
12. Previews, evaluates and recommends the purchase of materials,
equipment, and systems; involves developing specifications, meeting with
vendors and reviewing their bids, contacting current users, and testing
equipment for versatility and durability.
13. Maintains the inventory of College media and learning technologies
equipment. Oversees maintenance of other LTD records, files, and
collections in both manual and computerized formats.
14. Represents the Learning Resources Division on college committees and
serves as a liaison to outside groups, consortia, and institutions such
as K-12 districts, television broadcasters, WISD, MICTA and local
colleges.
15. Remains informed of new developments in media, communications, and
learning technologies, materials, and equipment. Develops, recommends
and implements new services and instructional delivery systems which
better meet the needs of the College.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in an instructional technology discipline, Library
Science, Communications or related field.
2. Three to five years of progressively responsible supervisory
experience, and experience in media production and learning technologies
systems and services, preferable in an education institution.
3. Experience in developing and administering a departmental budget, and
evidence of ability to recommend a budget for media and learning
technologies equipment and systems for an entire organization.
4. Technical knowledge and ability required to plan for and set up
systems using audiovisual, telecommunications, multimedia and network
based technologies.
5. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to
work with internal faculty and staff, as well as external customers and
vendors.
6. Teaching experience at the secondary or college level preferred.
7. Evidence of leadership or innovation in applying media and/or
instructional technologies to accomplish objective(s).
Working Conditions:
Occasional exposure to excessive noise from media, sound and video
systems.
Appointment/Salary:
Anticipated date of appointment is November 18, 1996. Initial annual
salary range is $40,730 - $44,803 on a twelve month base; Administrative
Group/ Professional Classification Level 32. Numerous fringe benefits
include health, dental, life insurances and Michigan Public School
Employee Retirement System.

**LIBRARY APPLICATIONS SPECIALIST**
College Center for Library Automation (CCLA) is seeking an
individual with initiative and commitment to quality service to
join the team providing LINCC, Library Information Network for
Community Colleges. CCLA provides LINCC as a statewide service
for the 28 Florida community colleges and their 58 associated
libraries, using DRA software.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS: A Library Applications Specialist designs
programs and materials to train users in the LINCC system;
conducts training and informational programs; provides ongoing
support for LINCC participants. Serves as staff resource person
in collection access management, acts as team leader or member
for implementation of new LINCC services and products.
Participates in organization-wide planning activities.
MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: The position requires a Masters
degree from a library school program accredited by the American
Library Association and two years professional library-related
experience in public services, circulation, interlibrary loan, or
audiovisual media services. One year experience with a local
library automated system (may be concurrent with other experience
required) and experience in developing and presenting education
or training activities.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Awareness of current trends in information
technology and its impact on library access services. Ability to
develop training programs and user aids. Ability to: train,
teach, and provide presentations in a variety of settings.
Ability to: communicate effectively verbally and in writing; work
with users of varying technical expertise; travel to user sites
at statewide locations. Ability to collaborate effectively within
a dynamic team environment. Ability to use personal computers.
Knowledge of DRA software desirable.
Minimum salary $35,000 annually, commensurable to training and
experience.

Head Cataloger
Portland State University Library seeks nominations and applications
for the position of Head Cataloger. Reporting to the Assistant Director
for Technical Services, this position administers the Cataloging Section
comprised of 4 professional librarians, 1 management service and 11.5
classified staff. The PSU Library has holdings of approximately 1 million
volumes and 10,000 serials subscriptions and standing orders. The
Library uses the Sirsi integrated library system and is a member of WLN.
RESPONSIBLE FOR overseeing the daily operation of the section;
ensuring the establishment of monographic and serials bibliographic
records, and the integration of records into the Library's OPAC;
overseeing the materials preparation, repair and binding operations;
planning, preparing and analyzing statistical and financial reports;
training, coordinating and evaluating staff; planning and developing
procedures for the improvement of work processes; maintaining
communication and encouraging the exchange of ideas.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: ALA accredited Master of Library
Science degree.
QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 3 years experience cataloging materials
of various types and formats in a medium to large academic library. At
least 2 years experience administering a cataloging department or
database management unit. Mastery of MARC, AACR2 rules and
interpretations, LC subject cataloging and classification, and LCSH/name
authority control. Strong supervisory, analytical, and organizational
skills. Demonstrated experience with one of the national bibliographic
utilities and with a local integrated system. Familiarity with European
languages as well as bibliographic terms in other languages. Excellent
interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Ability to provide
leadership in a computer-intensive environment. Ability to meet academic
tenure and promotion requirements.
RANK: Assistant Professor (faculty status; 1.0 FTE tenure track position;
12 month contract)
SALARY/BENEFITS: Commensurate with experience. Minimum $45,000.
