Postion Title:      Dean of Library & Instructional Services (LIS)

Responsibilities:   The Dean of LIS reports to the Provost and Vice
                    President for Academic Affiars, and is a member of
                    the Deans Council as well as other appropriate
                    academic and administrative councils.  S/he has
                    administrative responsibility for library-wide
                    planning and policy direction as well as
                    centralized library services such as budget,
                    personnel, systems development, archives,
                    information services, and fund raising
                    initiatives.  The Dean plays a university-wide
                    leadership role in the development and
                    implementation of information access including
                    distance learning, and represents the Timme and
                    Health Sciences libraries within the university
                    and throughout the larger library and higher
                    education communities.  S/he will plan and oversee
                    the proposed construction and development of a
                    new, highly-digitized, technologically-advanced
                    university library facility.

Qualifications:     REQUIRED: A masters degree in library/information
                    science from an American Library Association
                    accredited program.  Five years progressively
                    successful administrative experience in an
                    academic library which includes planning and
                    budgetary skills necessary to develop innovative,
                    technologically advanced programs and services.
                    Demonstrate effective organizational,
                    interpersonal, and oral and written communication
                    skills.  The candidate must also demonstrate the
                    ability to develop and maintain positive
                    relationships with a culturally diverse library
                    faculty and staff, classroom faculty, university
                    administration and students.
                    PREFERRED: Advanced subject degree; PhD
                    preferred.  One or more years of experience as a
                    public or technical services librarian.
                    Demonstrate understanding of and a commitment to
                    resource sharing/networking, library automation,
                    new information technologies, and faculty and
                    staff development.  Successful grant acquisition
                    and administration.  Experience in a work
                    environment which includes collective bargaining.

Salary:             Salary and benefits are competitive and
                    commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Reports to: Director, Library & Bibliographic Services
Salary:     In-Hire:  $3606 - $5039 per month, depending upon
                      background and qualifications
         Full Range:  $3606 - $6020 per month

Founded in 1974, The Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG) is a cooperative
association of leading educational, scientific, and cultural institutions.
This non-profit corporation currently serves over 150 general and special
members and over 1,000 organizations and individual scholars who use the
Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) database.  RLG has two
primary functions:  the development and operation of cooperative programs
to acquire, preserve, and extend access to research library, museum, and
archival holdings; and the development and operation of library and
bibliographic services that provides information access and management to
both member and nonmember institutions and individuals.  RLG has a staff of
100.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Library and Bibliographic Services Officer collaborates with both RLG
and member staff to ensure that the RLIN bibliographic database meets the
current and future needs of RLIN users as a resource for technical
processing and reference, ensures that RLIN provides the tools needed for
member collaborative services and develops strategies for an array of RLIN
products and services that integrate effectively with customers' local
environments.  Specific components of the portfolio will change over time.
Generally, the officer:

     *  works with RLIN institutions to facilitate bibliographic record
transfer between RLIN and local systems;
     *  takes the lead on establishing overall bibliographic principles
for all files accessible via RLIN, Eureka (RLG's patron-oriented search
service) or RLG's Z39.50 server and integrating overseas bibliographic data
into the RLIN bibliographic files, where appropriate;
     *  develops long-term and short-term strategies to develop new tools
and models that would better support local library processing;
     *  recommends pricing mechanisms that encourage contributions of
original, standardized cataloging records and use of the RLIN database for
source copy;
     *  analyzes and prioritizes proposed enhancements to RLIN;
     *  defines scope of RLG's implementation of MARC updates;
     *  collaborates on development of RLG bibliographic standards;
     *  ensures that RLG initiatives are responsive to the needs of its
RLIN institutional customers by organizing, with other library and
bibliographic services staff, regional RLIN Forums and conducting on-site
visits, developing surveys and making presentations as needed;
     *  sets up and facilitates task forces or advisory groups on specific
issues and ensures that recommendations are reflected in RLG service
initiatives;
     *  serves on the editorial board of the bimonthly "RLIN Focus"
publication.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Masters degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited
institution (or the equivalent in education and experience) and minimum
five years experience working in a research library using one or more local
library systems.

Comprehensive knowledge of and experience working with:  technical services
or public reference in various bibliographic formats; USMARC formats; one
or more local library systems.

Demonstrated ability to:  identify, analyze and resolve problems; think
creatively and strategically; communicate effectively with people at a
variety of levels and in a variety of situations, both orally and in
writing; work independently and as a team member; take initiative to define
new projects and how to best meet objectives; perform a multiplicity of
tasks with varying priorities; give effective presentations to groups and
individuals; represent the corporation at the national and international
level.

Thorough understanding of the inter-relationship of technical processing
and public services and awareness of current trends in research libraries.

Willingness to travel approximately 30 days a year.

Desired:

Familiarity with RLIN and Z39.50 clients; project management experience;
experience in authority work; use of non-US data resources; experience in
more than one functional area of a research library (e.g., technical
services/systems, collection development/reference); participation or
leadership in national or professional organizations related to library or
bibliographic services.
