INFORMATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST I/II
PUBLIC SERVICES
Broad Function: Under the general supervision of the Director for Public
Services, provides systems support for a wide range of public services
initiatives. Works closely with public services staff in Van Pelt Library
(the main social sciences and humanities library) and in a number of
departmental libraries to support specific electronic initiatives in
these libraries. Plays a key role as Public Services liaison with the
Library's Systems Office.
1. Acts as Public Services liaison with the Library's System's
Office in areas of project planning, technical testing, implementation,
evaluation and ongoing technical problem solving associated with computer
software, hardware, systems and telecommunications.
2. Provides leadership in the design and the development of the
Library's electronic information services including www, electronic
requests, document delivery, full text systems design, etc.
3. Trains and assists public services staff in the use of new
hardware and software. Prepares documentation and user aids for staff.
Helps public services staff develop and maintain knowledge and
understanding of new technology.
4. Assists public services units in Van Pelt and in departmental
libraries in planning for hardware and software upgrades for staff and
users. Responsible for customization of desktops for staff and end-user
workstations in these libraries.
5. Acts as key resource for implementation of special projects, e.g.
slide library imaging, which have specific networking/systems elements.
6. Trouble shoots technical problems that end users encounter in the
use of the library's electronic resources, e.g. connectivity,
downloading, client software. Interfaces between users, schools
computing staff and library staff in providing effective technical support.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent in
theory and practice. Familiarity with academic research libraries.
Knowledge of new digital library developments. Experience in providing
technical support for Macintosh and DOS/Windows environments.
Demonstrated ability to support hardware peripherals, operating systems
and software. Unix experience desirable. Excellent interpersonal and
communication skills with a strong customer service orientation are
essential.
Rank: Appointment as Information Systems Specialist I requires at least 2
yrs. microcomputer experience & knowledge of a wide range of application
software packages. Appointment as Information Systems Specialist II

interlibrary loan; shared responsibility for providing electronic
