ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE - JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:  Associate Librarian for Systems and Cataloging

NATURE OF DUTIES:  Designs, promotes, and implements library
systems and databases; establishes documentation and evaluation of
cataloging policies and procedures:  runs automated systems and
network; diagnoses software & hardware problems; repairs PCs &
Macintoshes; performs original and copy cataloging using OCLC;
manages Student Computer Center and the Campus Internet connection
(including all training); manages cataloging, network and computer
center student workers; provides training for library staff in
applications; prepares statistical reports and develops long and
short range plans.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:  The Associate Librarian for
Systems and Cataloging is an experienced professional who designs,
promotes, implements, and administers technical service operations
and automated systems.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to the College Librarian.

SUPERVISION GIVEN:  Supervises cataloging, network and computer
center assistants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Masters Degree in Library Science from an
ALA accredited program.  Two years of automated library systems and
two years of cataloging experience.  Knowledge of AACR2, MARC
formats, LC classification, LCSH, and OCLC.  Knowledge of DOS, PC
Networks, system testing and system debugging.  Ability to catalog
European language materials and knowledge of at least one foreign
language.  Demonstrated supervisory, teaching, communications, and
organizational skills.  Interest and willingness to participate in
ongoing professional training and development.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Management of Novell networks and
Internet connections.  Significant original cataloging experience.
Broad liberal arts education or completion of the St. John's
College program and a reading knowledge of ancient Greek and
French.

STATUS:  Exempt, full-time.

COMPENSATION:  $22,318 (min.) to $26,395 (mid) annually, with an
excellent benefits package.

HEAD OF AUTOMATION SERVICES.  Ellender Memorial Library, Nicholls
State University.  12-month, tenure track.  This position reports to
the Associate Director and Director and is responsible for
administration of the Library's automation activities.  The
automation librarian will coordinate planning, installation,
training, and operations support for computer hardware and software
dedicated to library functions, including stand-alones, CD-ROM
systems, Internet resources and remote services, library office
automation, and OPAC cataloging, acquisitions, circulation and
serials modules.  Acts as liaison for the library with the University
Computer Center and with LALINC, an online consortium of Louisiana
public and private academic libraries.  Maintains and provides access
to online search services.  Prepares statistics and reports.  Other
responsibilities are collection development in assigned discipline
and bibliographic instruction at upper division levels, and other
duties as required.  Some weekend and evening work.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  MLS from an ALA-accredited institution.
Experience in library automation, preferably in a research library.
Demonstrated competence with and technical knowledge of electronic
integrated systems, electronic information resources, and
microcomputer hardware and software.  Strong interpersonal and
communication skills, initiative and flexibility required.

PREFERRED:  Minimum of four years experience; working knowledge of
online public access catalogs, NOTIS and the Internet; OCLC hardware,
software and connectivity issues.

SALARY:  $28,500.  State of Louisiana benefits package.  Faculty
appointment, promotion and tenure.
