Distance Education Needs: Coordinating Electronic Reference Services
Have you found yourself at one (or both) ends of this timely challenge:
either serving patrons in your library who are not members of your
"institution", or knowing that your "students" are using other libraries
for their reference needs? From either perspective, electronic
reference services have created benefits and barriers in meeting the
needs of patrons, increasing in number, who do not live or may not use
the library close to where they attend classes. Challenges include
coping with restricted access to databases, lack of hardware/software
to support networked functions, and creative restructuring of
instruction opportunities.
Join MARS in listening to a panel of librarians and library educators
who are providing electronic reference services to remote patrons or
who have taught remote courses:
Julia Gelfand, Applied Sciences Librarian, University of California
at Irvine, and Adjunct Instructor
Craig Gibson, Associate Director for Information Services, George
Mason University
Karen Lange, Assistant Director for Extended Library Services,
University of Wyoming Library System
Jerry Notaro, Head of Instructional Technology, University of South
Florida - St. Petersburg Library
Richard J. Smith, Library Educator and Internet Trainer
Bring your questions to facilitate a lively discussion!
